The appeal for peaceful relations comes at a difficult time for Manipur. Community leaders and elected representatives face growing pressure to help restore trust, protect civilians and prevent further clashes.

Nemcha Kipgen and the call for peace

Nemcha Kipgen’s appeal for peace comes amid a worsening security situation in parts of Manipur. Recent incidents have raised concerns about the safety of Naga villagers and the need for stronger engagement between communities.

The state has experienced renewed tensions along areas connecting Imphal, Kangpokpi and Tamei. Violence in these areas has affected civilian life and added to existing divisions between communities.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho has called for greater efforts to address the unrest. On October 13, he met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh alongside church and religious leaders and security officials to discuss peace initiatives.

According to reports, the Chief Minister assured participants that additional security forces would be deployed in vulnerable and sensitive areas. The government also planned to engage civil society organisations and religious leaders in efforts to restore peace.

These developments highlight the importance of dialogue alongside security measures. However, lasting peace will require sustained engagement and practical steps to protect people in affected villages.

Nemcha Kipgen faces growing pressure

Nemcha Kipgen’s role in the peace process has drawn attention amid increasing tensions between Naga and Kuki-Zo groups. As a deputy chief minister, she faces expectations to support efforts to prevent violence and promote peaceful coexistence.

On October 13, Losii Dikho urged Kipgen to personally engage in efforts to stop attacks on Naga villages along the Imphal-Kangpokpi-Tamei road. He referred to allegations that armed Kuki groups were attacking Naga settlements in the area.

These allegations come amid a broader dispute over security and accountability. They should be distinguished from independently established findings about responsibility for individual attacks.

Earlier, the United Naga Council demanded Kipgen’s removal and called for action against her husband, Thangboi Kipgen, amid allegations linked to the violence. Kipgen has rejected allegations against herself and her husband, describing them as unverified claims that could further damage relations between communities.

The competing positions have added a political dimension to the security crisis. Nevertheless, protecting civilians and ensuring accountability remain central concerns for residents in affected areas.

Naga villages face continuing security concerns

Security concerns have intensified following reports of attacks and civilian deaths in several parts of Manipur. Naga organisations have repeatedly urged authorities to strengthen protection for vulnerable settlements.

On September 28, the Manipur Naga Youth Organisation called for security deployments in several villages across Senapati and Kangpokpi districts. The organisation cited repeated attacks and expressed concern about the safety of residents.

More recently, reports published in October described deadly incidents affecting Naga villages, including Makui and Tapon. Community organisations condemned the attacks and called for accountability.

Such incidents can deepen fear, disrupt daily activities and make it harder for residents to travel safely. They also increase pressure on authorities to prevent further violence.

Moreover, reliable security arrangements are essential for families who depend on local roads for education, healthcare, trade and other basic needs. Authorities must assess threats carefully and respond to specific risks without exposing civilians to further danger.

Dialogue remains central to reconciliation

Nemcha Kipgen’s outreach to Naga communities comes against a backdrop of strained inter-community relations. Meaningful dialogue could help address grievances, reduce misunderstandings and create opportunities for cooperation.

However, calls for peace must be supported by concrete action. Community representatives, religious leaders, civil society groups and government officials can contribute by maintaining communication and discouraging retaliation.

Furthermore, authorities need to investigate reported attacks fairly and establish responsibility through lawful procedures. Transparent investigations can help address public concerns while preventing unverified accusations from increasing tensions.

Local communities also need opportunities to communicate their security concerns directly to officials. Their participation can help identify vulnerable areas and improve responses to emerging threats.

Manipur peace efforts face a critical test

The situation in Manipur remains challenging as violence continues to strain relations between communities. Recent discussions involving the chief minister, deputy chief minister and religious leaders indicate ongoing efforts to address the crisis.

Nevertheless, statements supporting coexistence will need to translate into sustained engagement, civilian protection and accountability. Residents need safer villages, secure travel routes and confidence that authorities will respond to threats.

Nemcha Kipgen’s engagement with Naga communities is therefore significant within the wider debate over reconciliation and governance. Progress will depend on whether political leaders and community representatives can maintain dialogue despite deep disagreements.

Ultimately, peace in Manipur requires more than appeals for calm. Consistent security measures, fair investigations and genuine cooperation will be essential to rebuilding trust and helping affected communities live together without fear.
