The meeting focused on demands for justice for the late Assamese singer, whose death in Singapore in September 2025 sparked widespread grief and questions. The panel is expected to help coordinate efforts to press for accountability as legal proceedings continue.

Zubeen Garg case: Panel demands further investigation

The formation of the 21-member panel comes amid renewed concerns over the progress of the investigation and recent bail orders involving two accused. Participants want authorities to examine whether the existing chargesheet adequately addresses all aspects of the case.

Gogoi has repeatedly questioned whether the investigation conducted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) is sufficient to establish the full circumstances surrounding Garg’s death. He has also called on the Assam government to file a supplementary chargesheet.

A supplementary chargesheet can allow investigators to place additional evidence or findings before a court, subject to applicable legal procedures. However, any further filing must rely on admissible evidence and follow the law.

The panel’s formation signals an effort to organise public demands through a more structured platform. Its work could help keep attention on the investigation while ensuring that calls for justice remain focused on legal accountability.

Why the Zubeen Garg case remains under scrutiny

Zubeen Garg died on September 19, 2025, while swimming during a yacht outing in Singapore. He had travelled there to attend the North East India Festival.

His death deeply affected Assam, where the singer enjoyed immense popularity for his music and contributions to Assamese culture. Fans, artists and civil society groups subsequently demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Assam Police formed an SIT to investigate the case. The agency later submitted a chargesheet naming seven accused before a court in Guwahati in December 2025.

According to reports, the chargesheet included murder charges against four accused. The remaining accused faced other charges linked to the case.

However, the allegations against the accused remain subject to judicial scrutiny. The chargesheet represents the prosecution’s case, not a final determination of guilt.

The case has continued to attract attention because of Garg’s cultural influence and the seriousness of the allegations. Consequently, demands for transparency and a fair trial remain central to public discussion.

Recent bail orders renew public concern

Recent developments have added urgency to the demands for further action. Singer Amritprabha Mahanta received bail from the Gauhati High Court, while suspended Assam Police officer Sandipan Garg, the singer’s cousin, also secured bail.

The two bail orders prompted renewed discussion among people seeking justice for the singer. However, bail does not amount to an acquittal, nor does it determine whether an accused person is guilty or innocent.

Gogoi had earlier expressed concern that other accused could also obtain bail as the proceedings continued. He argued that the government should strengthen its case through additional investigation and a supplementary chargesheet, where supported by evidence.

Meanwhile, the legal process must continue independently of public opinion. Courts assess evidence, legal arguments and the applicable law before reaching decisions.

The panel’s demand therefore places renewed attention on the quality of the investigation and the prosecution’s ability to present a legally sustainable case.

Zubeen Garg case: What happens next?

The 21-member panel now faces the task of advancing the demands raised during the meeting. Its formation provides a platform for supporters to coordinate their efforts and seek further action from the authorities.

The immediate focus remains on the call for a supplementary chargesheet and closer scrutiny of the investigation. However, the panel’s formation does not itself compel investigators to file additional documents or alter the ongoing court proceedings.

Any further action will depend on the evidence available, the investigating agency’s assessment and the requirements of the legal process.

For Garg’s supporters, the demand for justice remains closely linked to establishing the circumstances of his death through a credible investigation and a fair trial.

Ultimately, the outcome of the Zubeen Garg case will depend on the evidence presented before the court and the judicial process. The newly formed panel is expected to sustain public pressure while the proceedings continue.
