CoTU Extends Shutdown Over Killing of Two Kuki Civilians

The Committee on Tribal Unity initially announced a 24-hour shutdown in Kangpokpi on Sunday following the recovery of the two youths’ bodies.

However, the organisation extended the shutdown by another 48 hours on Monday night, citing the government’s alleged failure to take concrete steps to ensure justice.

In an official statement, CoTU criticised what it described as the government’s “shameful indecision, unacceptable silence and continued failure to initiate any tangible action” regarding the killings.

The organisation demanded time-bound action against those responsible and said the Kuki-Zo community would not accept assurances or administrative explanations in place of justice.

Markets Closed, Vehicles Stranded Along National Highway

The shutdown significantly affected transportation and commercial activities across Kangpokpi.

Markets and business establishments remained closed as the protest continued. Several goods-laden vehicles travelling towards Imphal through the national highway could not enter Kangpokpi and remained stranded in neighbouring Senapati district, according to police.

The disruption also affected the movement of essential goods and commercial transportation along the highway.

To prevent any untoward incident, additional security personnel were deployed across sensitive locations in Kangpokpi. A senior police officer confirmed the security arrangements.

Bodies of Missing Youths Recovered in Senapati

The protests followed the recovery of the mutilated bodies of two Kuki civilians from a hilly stretch in Senapati district on Sunday morning.

The two youths had reportedly gone missing several days before their bodies were discovered.

Their deaths triggered anger within the Kuki-Zo community, with CoTU demanding accountability and immediate action from the state government.

The organisation has maintained that justice for the victims must be ensured through concrete and time-bound measures.

Manipur Continues to Face Ethnic Tensions

Manipur has experienced prolonged ethnic violence between the valley-based Meitei and hill-based Kuki communities since May 2023.

According to figures cited in the report, the conflict has claimed at least 306 lives, left 49 people missing and displaced thousands of people.

In recent months, clashes involving Kuki and Naga communities have also been reported, adding to concerns over the state’s security situation.
