Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal took a dig at the Modi government on Saturday as it completed nine years in power, highlighting the division in politics, the decline of promised “achche din” (good days), the capture of institutions, and the rupture of society. Sibal’s scathing remarks came just a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his nine-year tenure in office. The former Union minister’s criticism reflects growing discontent and calls for change ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Sibal, a prominent member of the opposition Congress party, did not mince his words as he pointed out the shortcomings of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. He accused the ruling party of exacerbating political divisions, failing to deliver on its promise of prosperity for all, and undermining the independence of vital institutions.

Over the course of the nine years under the Modi government, political polarization has deepened in the country. Sibal expressed his concern over the increasing division, emphasizing that it is crucial to foster unity and a shared vision for progress. He called for a change in government in the upcoming 2024 general elections, signaling his belief that a new leadership is needed to bridge the gaps and unite the nation.

Sibal’s reference to the fading of “achche din” reflects the disillusionment felt by many who had high hopes for the government’s promised economic growth and development. The phrase “achche din” was a popular slogan coined by the BJP during the 2014 elections, portraying a vision of prosperous times ahead. However, Sibal suggested that these promised good days have not materialized for a majority of the population, with economic challenges and unemployment still prevalent.

In addition to the political and economic concerns, Sibal highlighted the capture of institutions under the current regime. This has been a recurring criticism of the Modi government, with allegations of interference and erosion of institutional autonomy. Sibal’s comments suggest that the government’s actions have undermined the pillars of democracy, jeopardizing the checks and balances essential for a healthy functioning of the state.

Furthermore, Sibal criticized the impact of the government’s policies on society, emphasizing the rupture that has occurred. The country has witnessed increased social tensions and communal polarization during the Modi government’s tenure. Sibal argued that the government’s divisive politics has not only deepened societal fault lines but also hindered social progress and harmony. He called for a change in leadership to heal these rifts and foster a more inclusive and united society.

Sibal’s call for a change in government ahead of the 2024 general elections echoes the sentiments of many opposition parties and individuals who have expressed dissatisfaction with the current administration. As the country gears up for the next national elections, political dynamics are likely to intensify, with debates centering around governance, economic policies, social cohesion, and the future direction of the nation.

Kapil Sibal’s scathing remarks on the Modi government’s nine-year rule reflect the growing discontent and demand for change among opposition figures. Sibal criticized the deepening political divisions, the unfulfilled promise of “achche din,” the capture of institutions, and the rupture of society. His call for a change in government in the upcoming 2024 general elections underscores the need for new leadership to address these concerns and forge a more inclusive and united India.
