Amritpal Singh, a pro-Khalistan preacher who had been on the run since March 18, has been arrested by a joint team of Punjab Police and national intelligence from Punjab’s Moga. The Punjab Police have booked him under the National Security Act (NSA). He is being flown to Dibrugarh airport in Assam’s Dibrugarh district in an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft under a tight security cordon. He will be landing at the Dibrugarh airport around noon.
After landing at the Dibrugarh airport, Amritpal Singh will be taken to the high-security Dibrugarh Central Jail, where his nine associates, including his close aide Papalpreet Singh and Uncle Harjeet Singh, are currently lodged. Seven other members of his outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’, Daljeet Kalsi, Basant Singh, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala, Bhagwant Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Gurinder Pal Singh, and Varinder Singh, are also lodged at the same jail.
Amritpal Singh, an expert in changing appearances and evading police, was declared a fugitive in March when Punjab Police launched a massive manhunt across Punjab and adjoining areas to nab him. He has been changing various locations with the help of his close aides and traveling through nearby states. However, he finally surrendered to the Punjab Police on Sunday morning and was arrested from the Moga district.
Before his arrest, he released a video justifying his decision to evade the Punjab police. Currently, he is facing at least six cases, and the Punjab Police have invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against him. Several of his aides and supporters also face multiple cases.
