“In a career spanning some of the most volatile regions and complex policing environments of West Bengal, Aneesh Sarkar IPS has emerged as a formidable figure in law enforcement. From counterinsurgency in Maoist-affected Lalgarh to leading urban policing operations in Bidhannagar, his journey reflects a rare blend of courage, precision, and public service at its finest.”

Aneesh Sarkar IPS, presently serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Zone, has carved a distinguished path in policing marked by extraordinary resilience, tactical brilliance, and an unwavering commitment to duty.

His career began in one of the most challenging terrains — the Maoist-affected region of Lalgarh, Paschim Medinipur. As a probationer, and later a frontline officer in anti-Maoist operations, Sarkar faced firsthand the volatility of insurgency. His nearly three-year stint there laid the foundation for a career defined by operations under pressure and leadership in crisis.

Following Lalgarh, Sarkar was posted as Assistant Commissioner of Police (Airport) in the newly created Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate. His tenure witnessed the neutralization of the notorious Babai gang, responsible for a series of brutal murders in the city. His success in this role earned him swift recognition for his strategic policing abilities.

Sarkar’s expertise in counterterrorism was further solidified during his time as Assistant Commissioner of Police, Anti-Terrorist Squad, Bidhannagar, where he led the team that arrested the head of the Jamiat ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), a group implicated in the Bardhaman blast case. As Deputy Superintendent of Police, CID, he played a central role in apprehending the main accused in the Ranaghat rape case — an incident that captured national headlines and outrage. His efforts in cyber operations, including infiltrating ISIS-linked networks after a key arrest, provided critical intelligence about the inner workings of the banned outfit.

In subsequent postings, Sarkar demonstrated consistent leadership under duress. As Additional Superintendent of Police, Murshidabad, he managed the aftermath of the tragic Daulatabad bus accident, which claimed 42 lives and triggered widespread unrest. Despite being injured, his quick action helped restore order and earned commendation from the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. He also played a crucial role in maintaining stability during the tumultuous period of the NRC agitation.

Later, posted in Malda, Sarkar intensified the fight against drug trafficking and cross-border smuggling. As Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) and then Special Superintendent of Police, CID (Malda Zone), he oversaw significant drug seizures, including ₹1.4 crore recovered from a hideout in Gazole, and initiated actions that led to the freezing of assets of major cattle smuggling operatives.

Returning to urban policing in February 2024 as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar Zone, Aneesh Sarkar has continued to navigate complex law-and-order challenges with the same determination and tactical acumen that have marked his career.

Beyond his policing duties, Mr. Sarkar is set to complete his debut novel based on the Maoist movement in Lalgarh, tracing the journey of a police officer and three rebels amidst the insurgency’s rise and fall. Drawing from his lived experiences, the novel is expected to offer a rare and compelling insight into one of the most turbulent chapters of recent Indian history.

Aneesh Sarkar IPS stands as a notable figure in contemporary policing, embodying the values of courage, dedication, and service to the nation.
