Cooperatives NCCF and NAFED have taken an initiative to provide relief to consumers in Delhi-NCR and Patna by selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of Rs 90 per kg. The move comes as the retail price of tomatoes has sharply risen in recent weeks, reaching as high as Rs 244 per kg in some parts of the country due to the combination of the lean season and heavy rains. The National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) are acting on behalf of the Indian government to make tomatoes more affordable for the public.
NCCF Managing Director, Anice Joseph Chandra, stated that approximately 80 percent of the 17,000 kg of tomatoes available were sold by the evening of the initiative’s launch. He further added that the reach and quantity of discounted tomatoes would be increased from the following day in the Delhi-NCR region.
