A tragic hit-and-run accident in Delhi has claimed the life of Deepanshu Verma (30) and left his cousin, Mukul Verma (20), injured. The incident occurred on Saturday night when an SUV collided with the bike carrying the two victims. According to police officials, the impact of the collision flung Deepanshu into the air and he landed on the roof and bonnet of the SUV, while Mukul fell on the road. Shockingly, the driver of the SUV did not stop and drove with Deepanshu on the bonnet for about half a kilometer before dropping him on the road and fleeing the scene.
Both victims were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where Deepanshu was declared dead upon arrival. Mukul was admitted for treatment of his injuries.
The accused driver of the SUV was arrested on Sunday, and the vehicle involved in the accident was seized, as reported by the police. The driver now faces charges of causing death by negligence and hit-and-run.
This incident is not the first of its kind in the city, as earlier on Sunday, a similar accident occurred when a car drove for 2-3 kilometers with a person hanging on the bonnet. The victim, identified as Chetan, was a driver who had just dropped off a passenger. The accused driver, Ramchand Kumar, reportedly touched Chetan’s car three times before the latter came out of his car and stood in front of Kumar’s vehicle. The incident resulted in Chetan hanging on the bonnet of the car while Kumar drove for several kilometers before stopping.
The incidents have raised serious concerns about road safety in the city, with many calling for stricter penalties for hit-and-run accidents. The Delhi Police have urged citizens to report any such incidents and assist them in apprehending the accused drivers. The loss of Deepanshu Verma’s life is a tragic reminder of the need for better road safety measures and responsible driving.
