In the highly anticipated Prime Video series “I’m a Virgo,” Hollywood star Jharrel Jerome takes on the role of Cootie, a 13-feet-tall man growing up in Oakland, California. Jerome believes that his character represents a stark reflection of the reality faced by the Black community in America, where they are often unjustly perceived as a threat. Created by Boots Riley, the alternative hip hop artiste and activist known for his directorial debut in the absurdist comedy “Sorry to Bother You,” the show promises to be a darkly comedic fantastical coming-of-age joyride.

“Cootie” delves into the life of a gentle giant who has spent his entire childhood isolated from society, raised in seclusion by his uncle and aunt. The reason behind his solitary existence is his extraordinary size, which sets him apart from others. However, Cootie’s curiosity and yearning for connection eventually drive him to break free from his sheltered upbringing. As he ventures out into the real world, he encounters both the beauty and contradictions that lie within it.

Through Cootie’s journey, the series aims to shed light on the experiences of marginalized communities, particularly the Black community, and the preconceived notions and stereotypes that they often face. Jerome, known for his powerful performances in projects like “When They See Us” and “Moonlight,” brings depth and authenticity to the character of Cootie, capturing the struggles and resilience of an individual grappling with societal expectations and perceptions.

Boots Riley, known for his thought-provoking and unconventional storytelling, infuses “I’m a Virgo” with his unique vision. Drawing from his background as an alternative hip hop artiste and activist, Riley explores themes of identity, race, and social commentary within the framework of a darkly comedic and fantastical narrative. Just as he did in his debut film “Sorry to Bother You,” which received critical acclaim for its biting satire on capitalism and the exploitation of labor, Riley aims to challenge the audience’s perspective and provoke thought through “I’m a Virgo.”

The show’s title, “I’m a Virgo,” offers a hint of the introspection that the series will explore. Virgos are often associated with traits such as practicality, intellect, and a deep sense of responsibility. By incorporating this astrological sign into the title, the show may hint at Cootie’s journey of self-discovery, self-acceptance, and the realization of his own unique strengths and qualities. It invites viewers to reflect on their own identities and the roles they play in shaping society’s perceptions.
