The 96th Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are set to take place in 2023, and the full list of nominations has been announced. This year’s nominees include a diverse group of films and filmmakers from around the world, with several notable surprises and snubs.

One of the biggest surprises of the nominations is the inclusion of the Indian film “RRR” in the Best Song category. The film, which is directed by SS Rajamouli, is a fictional story set in the pre-independence era of India, and its song “Jaaneman Jaaneman” has been recognized for its powerful lyrics and emotional impact. This marks the first time an Indian film has been nominated in this category, making it a historic moment for the country’s film industry.

Another notable nomination is the inclusion of “All That Breathes” in the Best Documentary Feature category. The film, which is directed by Abhishek Verma, is a powerful and emotional look at the impact of climate change on the people and wildlife of India. The film’s nomination is a testament to the skill and dedication of its filmmakers, as well as the importance of raising awareness about this pressing global issue.

In the Best Picture category, the nominees are “The French Dispatch” directed by Wes Anderson, “Minari” directed by Lee Isaac Chung, “Nomadland” directed by Chloe Zhao, “Promising Young Woman” directed by Emerald Fennell, “Sound of Metal” directed by Darius Marder, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” directed by Aaron Sorkin and “Judas and the Black Messiah” directed by Shaka King.

The Best Director category is dominated by female directors, with Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland”, Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman”, and Regina King for “One Night in Miami” receiving nods.

The Best Actress category sees Carey Mulligan for “Promising Young Woman”, Frances McDormand for “Nomadland”, Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces of a Woman”, Andra Day for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday” and Viola Davis for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” being nominated.

The Best Actor category sees Anthony Hopkins for “The Father”, Riz Ahmed for “Sound of Metal”, Gary Oldman for “Mank”, Steven Yeun for “Minari” and Tahar Rahim for “The Mauritanian” being nominated.

It is worth noting that this year’s nominations have been criticized for their lack of diversity, with several notable actors, directors, and films from underrepresented groups being snubbed. The Academy has pledged to address this issue in the coming years, but the lack of representation in this year’s nominations is a reminder that there is still much work to be done.

Overall, the 2023 Oscars nominations list is a reflection of the diverse and talented pool of filmmakers and films in the industry, and it promises to be an exciting and memorable ceremony. With “RRR” making history and “All That Breathes” raising awareness on an important global issue, we can expect to see a celebration of cinematic excellence and meaningful stories that have been told.
