Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-nation trip, starting with Japan, where he will participate in the annual summit of the G7 grouping and the third in-person Quad leaders’ meeting. The visit aims to exchange views with world leaders on pressing global challenges and explore collective approaches to tackle them. With a schedule packed with over 40 engagements, Modi is set to interact with more than two dozen world leaders, both in summit settings and bilateral meetings.

Modi’s arrival in the Japanese city marked the beginning of his multi-country journey, which includes stops in Papua New Guinea and Australia. The primary focus of this leg is the participation in the G7 summit, a gathering of the world’s most advanced economies. The summit provides a platform for leaders to discuss a wide range of global issues, including climate change, pandemic recovery, trade, and geopolitical tensions.

In addition to the G7 summit, Modi will also take part in the third in-person Quad leaders’ meeting. The Quad, consisting of the United States, Japan, Australia, and India, serves as a strategic forum to enhance cooperation on regional and global challenges. Through this meeting, Modi aims to strengthen India’s engagement with the Quad partners and explore opportunities for collaboration in areas such as maritime security, technology, and supply chain resilience.

During his visit, the Indian Prime Minister is expected to engage in extensive diplomatic discussions. With a diverse range of world leaders present, Modi will have ample opportunities for bilateral meetings and informal interactions. These interactions provide a platform to deepen existing partnerships and foster new ones, facilitating constructive dialogue on shared interests and concerns.

The summit and bilateral meetings offer a crucial platform for India to assert its position on global issues and contribute to shaping the global agenda. With the COVID-19 pandemic still posing significant challenges, Modi is likely to emphasize the need for international collaboration in vaccine distribution, healthcare infrastructure, and economic recovery. India, as the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, has played a crucial role in supplying vaccines to other countries, and Modi may seek further avenues to enhance global vaccination efforts.

Climate change is another prominent area where Modi’s voice is expected to be heard. India has been actively pursuing renewable energy initiatives and sustainable development goals. The Prime Minister might highlight India’s commitment to climate action and call for increased cooperation among nations to address this urgent global issue.

Furthermore, discussions on trade and economic cooperation are likely to feature prominently in Modi’s engagements. With the rise of protectionism and trade disputes, Modi may stress the importance of free and fair trade, advocating for a rules-based international trading system. Enhancing economic ties with key partners and exploring avenues for investment and collaboration are essential elements of India’s diplomatic agenda.

In the realm of security, the Quad leaders’ meeting presents an opportunity for Modi to reaffirm India’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Maritime security, counterterrorism efforts, and defense cooperation are expected to be key topics of discussion. Strengthening the Quad partnership and fostering a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region align with India’s broader strategic interests.

Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the G7 summit and the Quad leaders’ meeting reflects India’s growing prominence on the global stage. It signifies India’s willingness to engage actively in addressing global challenges and shaping international discourse. By exchanging views with world leaders and participating in a multitude of engagements, Modi aims to promote India’s interests while contributing to collective efforts to build a more secure, sustainable, and equitable world.
