A Step Toward Patient-Centric Healthcare

The AIIMS-Delhi night-shelter facility marks a major milestone in patient care. With support from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has operationalised Ashray, a dedicated shelter designed to provide safe, dignified accommodation for patients and their attendants who often spend nights outside the hospital waiting for outpatient services.

Why the Facility Was Needed

AIIMS-Delhi handles nearly 15,000 OPD patients daily, many of whom travel from distant states. With limited lodging options, hundreds of patients and attendants were forced to sleep on pavements, corridors, or hospital grounds.

  • Problem: Overcrowding and overnight queues outside AIIMS.
  • Impact: Patients endured harsh weather, discomfort, and lack of dignity.
  • Solution: Ashray provides a structured, humane alternative.

Inside the Ashray Facility

Safe Shelter and Comfort

The AIIMS-Delhi night-shelter facility offers:

  • Clean sleeping arrangements.
  • Basic amenities for attendants.
  • A token-based system for OPD registration.

Eco-Friendly Transport

Patients arriving at night are identified and transported to the shelter using electric shuttle buses, reducing carbon emissions while ensuring convenience.

Orderly Registration

Upon arrival, each patient receives a token number in the order of reporting. This ensures fairness and eliminates the need to queue overnight.

Benefits of the Night-Shelter Facility

  • Improved dignity: Patients no longer sleep on the streets.
  • Reduced overcrowding: Hospital premises remain more organized.
  • Fair access: Token system ensures equal opportunity for OPD registration.
  • Eco-conscious: Electric buses promote sustainable transport.

Challenges Ahead

While Ashray is a breakthrough, challenges remain:

  • Capacity limits: Current shelter may not accommodate all patients.
  • Awareness: Patients must be informed about the facility.
  • Expansion needs: AIIMS may need additional shelters or NGO partnerships.

Broader Context

Delhi has long struggled with overcrowding at major hospitals. Initiatives like Ashray align with the government’s push for patient-centric healthcare. Similar shelters across the city provide warm beds, meals, and dignity to homeless residents.

The AIIMS-Delhi night-shelter facility is more than infrastructure—it’s a promise of compassionate healthcare. Patients and attendants should make use of Ashray to ensure comfort and dignity during their hospital visits.

Healthcare policymakers and other hospitals must replicate this model nationwide to ensure no patient sleeps on the streets while seeking treatment.
