Growing Participation After Successful Debut

The inaugural Aizawl International Half Marathon was held in April 2025 and attracted around 1,500 athletes from across India. Encouraged by the response, organisers plan to scale up the event this year with more runners, better facilities, and wider national outreach.

Minister Hmar said improved connectivity will further boost participation. With the railway network now extended to Sairang near Aizawl, travel to the state has become easier for athletes and spectators from different parts of the country.

International Athletes and Bigger Prize Pool

According to the Sports Minister, professional athletes from several countries are expected to compete in the upcoming edition. The total prize money for the event will exceed Rs 15 lakh, making it one of the most significant road races in the Northeast.

Organisers believe the presence of international runners will raise the competitive standard of the event. It will also help place Mizoram on the global marathon map.

Focus on Health, Culture and Tourism

Hmar said the Aizawl International Half Marathon goes beyond competitive running. He stressed that the event promotes public health and encourages an active lifestyle among citizens.

At the same time, the marathon offers a platform to showcase Mizoram’s rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and warm hospitality. “The AIHM is more than a race. It is Mizoram’s invitation to the world and a permanent highlight on our tourism calendar,” the minister said.

Strong Push for Sports-Led Tourism

State officials see the marathon as part of a broader strategy to use sports as a driver of tourism and youth engagement. Cultural programmes and local exhibitions are also expected to be organised alongside the race to enhance the visitor experience.

With growing interest from athletes nationwide and abroad, the second edition of the Aizawl International Half Marathon is expected to draw record participation and further strengthen Mizoram’s reputation as an emerging sports destination.
