Key Facts

  • Issue: Alleged irregularities in ₹187.90 crore compensation
  • Location: Lengpui, 32 km from Aizawl, Mizoram
  • Parties: MNF (Opposition), ZPM Government
  • Key Date: February 23 consent notification
  • Purpose of Land: Indian Air Force aviation facilities
  • Main Concern: Non-original landowners received major compensation

MNF Steps Up Criticism

The MNF has sharply criticized the ZPM-led government and questioned its intent. At a press conference, MNF legal board vice-chairman Lalpianfela Chawngthu said the government has not taken real action to start the probe.

He explained that a consent notification alone does not trigger a CBI investigation. Instead, officials must send a formal request along with documents to the CBI director. However, the government has not completed this step so far.

Therefore, the MNF believes the notification serves only as a symbolic move rather than a serious effort.

Opposition Raises Transparency Concerns

Meanwhile, the MNF has also highlighted a lack of transparency. Party leaders approached the chief secretary on March 25 to seek updates. However, officials redirected them to the vigilance department.

Subsequently, the vigilance secretary promised to share documents on March 26. Yet, the department has not provided any records to the MNF.

As a result, the opposition argues that the delay weakens public trust and raises accountability concerns.

Government Defends Its Position

On the other hand, the ZPM government has rejected the allegations. A government representative stated that authorities have already granted consent for a CBI probe.

Moreover, the official emphasized that the government acted after receiving complaints from both the MNF and the Congress. Therefore, the administration claims it has followed proper procedure.

However, the government has not clarified whether it has submitted the formal request required to begin the investigation.

Background of the Case

The controversy centers on land near Lengpui Airport. Authorities acquired this land to support Indian Air Force operations, including fighter aircraft deployment and refuelling infrastructure.

However, opposition parties allege serious flaws in the compensation process. They claim that two individuals, who were not original landowners, received most of the ₹187.90 crore payout.

In contrast, genuine landowners reportedly received much smaller shares. Consequently, these allegations have triggered demands for an independent probe.

Q&A Section

What happened?
The MNF accused the Mizoram government of delaying a CBI probe into a major land compensation case.

Why is the issue controversial?
Because non-original landowners allegedly received most of the compensation.

Has the CBI probe started?
No, authorities have not confirmed any formal request to the CBI.

When did the government grant consent?
The government issued the consent notification on February 23.

Why did authorities acquire the land?
They acquired it for Indian Air Force aviation infrastructure.

Location Context

Mizoram plays a crucial role in Northeast India due to its strategic location near international borders. Therefore, projects near Lengpui Airport hold both defense and connectivity importance. Transparent land policies remain essential for maintaining public trust in such developments.
