Congress Prepares for Major Campaign Push

The Congress party is gearing up for an aggressive election campaign across Assam. Leaders and party workers are mobilising resources and planning rallies to strengthen their presence before polling begins.

According to party insiders, the campaign will intensify after March 26, which marks the last date for withdrawal of nominations. After this stage, the party leadership plans to roll out a series of public events and outreach programmes.

Top Leaders to Lead Public Meetings

Rahul Gandhi, who serves as the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is expected to headline several major rallies across the state. He will focus on issues such as social welfare, governance, and development while criticising the ruling NDA alliance.

Meanwhile, Mallikarjun Kharge will coordinate key campaign events and interact with party workers. His role will include strengthening organisational strategy during the crucial phase of the election campaign.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will lead outreach programmes targeting women voters. Since women make up nearly half of Assam’s electorate, the party considers this segment crucial for its electoral strategy.

Focus on Key Constituencies in Upper Assam

Congress leaders plan to hold around five major public rallies along with multiple smaller meetings. These gatherings aim to connect directly with voters and highlight the party’s agenda.

Additionally, the party will concentrate efforts in nearly 35 constituencies located in Upper Assam. Districts such as Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Majuli, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji remain important battlegrounds where Congress hopes to challenge the NDA’s influence.

Party strategists believe that focused campaigning in these regions could significantly impact the overall election outcome.

Congress Aims for Political Comeback

Congress has remained in opposition in Assam since 2016. Therefore, the upcoming election is seen as a crucial opportunity for the party to regain political ground in the state.

Although party leaders express confidence, they also recognise that the contest will be challenging. The ruling alliance continues to maintain a strong presence across several regions of Assam.

Nevertheless, Congress leaders believe that a coordinated campaign and strong voter outreach could improve their chances in the election.

Why Assam Matters in Northeast Politics

Assam is the largest and most politically influential state in Northeast India. Political developments in Assam often shape electoral trends across the region.

As a result, the outcome of the 2026 assembly elections will play a significant role in determining the political landscape of the Northeast.
