Assam Budget Prioritises Infrastructure and Economic Growth

The Assam Government has unveiled its 2026-27 Budget with a major push toward infrastructure expansion and long-term economic transformation. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah presented the budget, highlighting several flagship projects designed to improve connectivity and attract investment across the state.

The biggest announcement is the allocation of ₹10,000 crore for the launch of AsomMala IV, the latest phase of Assam’s flagship road development programme. The project will construct 800 kilometres of new long-distance roads, further expanding the state’s transport network.

AsomMala IV to Expand Road Connectivity

The new phase builds on the success of earlier AsomMala projects. Previous phases completed 880 kilometres of roads and 34 bridges across all districts at a cost of ₹3,217 crore.

Moreover, the government expects the new investment to improve regional connectivity, reduce travel time, and support industrial and commercial growth throughout Assam.

High-Speed Economic Corridors Announced

Another key feature of the budget is the announcement of two high-speed economic corridors. The first corridor will connect Guwahati and Silchar, reducing travel time from around 10 hours to just 5 hours.

Meanwhile, the second corridor will link Guwahati with Siliguri, creating faster transport routes for passengers and freight. Consequently, these projects are expected to strengthen trade, logistics, and regional economic activity.

Airports, Railways and Tourism Receive Major Boost

The government has also proposed a new railway line connecting Umrangso, aiming to improve tourism and accessibility in the region.

In addition, the budget includes approvals for five-star hotels in Manas National Park, Haflong, and Umrangso, which could strengthen Assam’s tourism sector and attract more domestic and international visitors.

Furthermore, the government will upgrade Rupsi Airport in Dhubri to improve trade links with Bhutan and Bangladesh. It also plans to build the Dolu Greenfield Airport in Silchar to enhance air connectivity in southern Assam.

Guwahati Set for Major Urban Development

The budget proposes a flyover connecting Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport with Jalukbari. As a result, commuters will be able to reach the city’s main gateway in less than 10 minutes.

Besides improving transport, the government plans to develop an Aero City around Guwahati Airport and establish a Satellite Township. These projects aim to transform Guwahati into a modern and well-planned urban centre.

Green Energy and Development Vision

The Assam Government has also placed emphasis on renewable energy. It announced pumped storage power projects in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, supporting the state’s clean energy goals.

According to the government, these infrastructure and energy investments form part of its vision to make Assam a developed state within the next five years.

Meanwhile, the Assam BJP described the 2026-27 Budget as a roadmap for industrial growth, advanced communication networks, and a stronger economy.
