Key Facts

  • Leader: Aminul Islam
  • Party: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF)
  • Position: Former Vice President, Mankachar MLA
  • Resignation Date: March 2026
  • Party Chief: Badruddin Ajmal
  • Polling Date: April 9, 2026
  • Result Date: May 4, 2026

Main Developments

In a surprising move, Aminul Islam resigned from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) just weeks before the Assam Assembly elections. He ended a two-decade-long association with the party.

Earlier, the party had suspended him for six years. The leadership accused him of anti-party activities and alleged support for rival political groups. Consequently, the decision created tensions within the party ranks.

However, Islam stated that personal reasons led to his resignation. He clarified that he holds no grudges against the party or its leadership.

Statements and Political Signals

While speaking publicly, Aminul Islam described Badruddin Ajmal as his mentor. He emphasized that he worked under Ajmal’s leadership for 20 years.

Moreover, he indicated that he may still contest the upcoming elections. He said he would consult voters in his constituency before making a final decision. Therefore, his next political move remains uncertain.

AIUDF Candidate List Announced

Meanwhile, the All India United Democratic Front released its second list of candidates. The list includes Badruddin Ajmal from Binnakandi and Hafiz Bashir Ahmed from Goalpara East.

In addition, Nazrul Hoque will contest from Dhubri, while Mazibur Rahman will represent Dalgaon. Other candidates include Ashraful Hussain (Chenga), Abdul Aziz (Samaguri), and Shihab Uddin (Karimganj South).

Furthermore, the party has fielded Imdad Hussain (Chamaria), Jamsher Talukdar (Golakganj), Musukha Basumatary (Bijni), Mukut Das (Raha), and Anup Kr. Das Talukdar (Ram Krishna Nagar).

Election Context

The Assam Assembly elections will take place in a single phase on April 9, 2026. The Election Commission of India has scheduled vote counting for May 4.

The BJP-led NDA, under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to secure a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the Congress-led alliance seeks to regain political ground.

In the 2021 elections, the NDA won 75 seats, including 60 by the BJP. In contrast, the Congress-AIUDF alliance secured 16 seats. Earlier, in 2016, the BJP won 60 seats, Congress 26, and AIUDF 13.

Why It Matters

The resignation of Aminul Islam could impact electoral dynamics in key constituencies. His influence in Mankachar and surrounding areas may affect voter alignment.

Moreover, internal shifts within AIUDF could reshape opposition strategies ahead of the polls. Therefore, the development adds uncertainty to the political landscape.

Location Context

Assam plays a crucial role in Northeast India’s politics. Consequently, developments in the state often influence regional alliances and electoral outcomes.
