Assam Flood Situation: Relief Operations Intensify

Assam’s flood crisis continues to cause widespread disruption even as water levels gradually decline in parts of Upper Assam. According to the latest DRIMS bulletin, 68 people have lost their lives in the floods.

The state government is now focusing strongly on relief and rehabilitation. Restoring electricity and other essential services has also become a major priority in areas where flood-related disruptions forced authorities to suspend power supply as a safety precaution.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that ministers will be deployed across districts to coordinate relief and rehabilitation measures.

The government has identified Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat among the areas requiring particular attention. Officials are monitoring the situation while relief operations continue on the ground.

Power Restoration Underway

Electricity restoration has started in several flood-affected districts. However, supply is being resumed carefully to prevent accidents in areas where floodwaters may have damaged electrical infrastructure.

The Assam Power Distribution Co. Ltd is conducting safety inspections before restoring electricity in phases. Authorities are prioritising areas where conditions have become safe for power supply.

The restoration of electricity is expected to support households, relief camps, healthcare facilities and other essential services affected by the floods.

Centre and Assam Government Coordinate Relief

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the flood situation as “very serious” and said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring developments.

Sonowal said the Centre and Assam governments are working together on rescue and relief operations. Relief materials are being distributed to affected communities, while emergency teams continue to assist people stranded by floodwaters.

A high-level inter-ministerial team has also reached Assam to assess the damage and review the situation on the ground.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) remain actively involved in rescue and relief operations.

Lakhs Displaced, Farmland Submerged

Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia highlighted the extensive damage to agricultural land and the displacement of large numbers of people.

More than 40 relief camps have been established in Sivasagar alone, providing shelter to approximately 20,000 people.

As of July 25, more than 6.54 lakh people across 10 districts were affected. The districts include Golaghat, Charaideo, Kamrup, Hojai, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Kamrup Metropolitan and Nagaon.

Sivasagar remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 2.9 lakh people impacted.

The flooding has also affected agriculture severely. Around 35,000 hectares of farmland have been submerged, raising concerns about crop losses and the livelihoods of farming communities.

Rivers Continue Above Danger Levels

Despite some improvement in the flood situation, several rivers remain a concern.

According to the Central Water Commission, the Dikhou River in Sivasagar and the Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh are continuing to flow above their respective danger levels.

Authorities are therefore maintaining close surveillance in vulnerable areas while continuing evacuation, relief distribution and other emergency measures.

What is the Assam flood death toll?

According to the latest DRIMS bulletin cited in the report, 68 people have died due to the flood situation in Assam.

How many people have been affected?

More than 6.54 lakh people across 10 districts were affected as of July 25.

Which district is worst affected?

Sivasagar is the worst-hit district, with nearly 2.9 lakh people affected.

Is electricity being restored?

Yes. Power restoration is underway in several districts. Assam Power Distribution Co. Ltd is conducting safety inspections before restoring electricity in phases.

What is the condition of the rivers?

The Dikhou River in Sivasagar and Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh continue to flow above danger levels, according to the Central Water Commission.

Why is Assam important to the Northeast?

Assam is a major gateway to Northeast India and serves as an important centre for transport, agriculture, trade and connectivity. Widespread flooding in the state can therefore affect communities, infrastructure, agriculture and connectivity across the wider Northeast region.
