The G20 working group meetings have made significant progress in their efforts to prioritize culture in policymaking, according to Union minister Pralhad Joshi. The delegates at the G20 working group meeting, which commenced on Sunday, have been actively engaged in identifying key areas and formulating action-oriented recommendations.

Joshi expressed his satisfaction with the strides made by the working group, emphasizing the importance of placing culture at the center of policymaking. He outlined the group’s primary objective of reaching a consensus on a ministerial declaration that encompasses four key priorities. These priorities serve as fundamental pillars in shaping an inclusive and sustainable future.

The first priority is the Protection and Restitution of Cultural Property. This area focuses on preserving and safeguarding cultural artifacts, recognizing their significance in promoting cultural diversity and heritage. The working group aims to establish measures to prevent the illicit trafficking of cultural property and facilitate the return of stolen artifacts to their rightful owners.

The second priority is Harnessing Living Heritage for a Sustainable Future. This area highlights the value of intangible cultural heritage and its potential for contributing to sustainable development. The working group seeks to explore ways to leverage living heritage, such as traditional knowledge and practices, to address pressing global challenges like environmental sustainability and social cohesion.

The third priority is the Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries and Creative Economy. This area recognizes the economic potential of cultural and creative industries. The working group aims to foster an enabling environment that supports the growth and sustainability of these industries, thereby driving economic development, job creation, and innovation.

The fourth priority is Leveraging Digital Technologies for the Protection and Promotion of Culture. This area acknowledges the transformative power of digital technologies in preserving and promoting cultural heritage. The working group intends to harness these technologies to enhance access to cultural resources, facilitate digital preservation efforts, and foster innovative approaches to cultural engagement.

By deliberating on these four key priorities, the G20 working group aims to develop action-oriented recommendations that can guide policymakers in integrating culture into their decision-making processes. The objective is to elevate culture as a critical component in addressing global challenges and shaping a more inclusive and sustainable future.

The progress made by the working group demonstrates the commitment of G20 nations to recognize the intrinsic value of culture and its role in shaping societies. As the meetings continue, delegates will work towards consensus-building and refining the ministerial declaration, which will serve as a roadmap for integrating culture into policymaking at a global level.

By placing culture at the heart of policymaking, the G20 working group endeavors to foster greater appreciation and understanding of cultural diversity, stimulate economic growth, and promote sustainable development. Through their collaborative efforts, the participating nations aim to pave the way for a future where culture plays a central role in shaping policies that benefit societies and create a more harmonious and prosperous world.
