Gangtok: The Union Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) has announced a ₹583-crore development package for Sikkim during the state’s 51st Statehood Day celebrations. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched the ₹360-crore Mission Sikkim Organics programme, which aims to strengthen Sikkim’s position as a global organic farming hub and support more than 66,000 farming families.

Centre Launches Major Development Push for Sikkim

The Centre has unveiled a comprehensive ₹583-crore development package for Sikkim, reinforcing the state’s role as a leader in sustainable growth and organic agriculture.

During his visit to Gangtok, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched several initiatives aimed at strengthening infrastructure, promoting eco-friendly development, and expanding economic opportunities. As a result, the package is expected to accelerate growth across multiple sectors.

Mission Sikkim Organics to Benefit Farmers

A key highlight of the announcement was the launch of the Mission Sikkim Organics programme, which carries an estimated outlay of ₹360 crore.

The initiative aims to transform Sikkim into a globally integrated premium organic economy. Moreover, the programme is expected to benefit over 66,000 farming families by improving market access, infrastructure, and value-chain development.

MDoNER will contribute ₹85 crore toward infrastructure creation, aggregation systems, and programme coordination. Meanwhile, additional funding and technical support will come through Central ministries, NABARD, APEDA, and private-sector partnerships.

Infrastructure Projects Worth ₹223 Crore

Alongside the organic mission, the Centre inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 21 development projects valued at ₹223 crore.

These projects cover roads, bridges, tourism facilities, and public connectivity infrastructure. Consequently, they are expected to improve regional access, strengthen transportation networks, and create new opportunities for local businesses and communities.

Key Projects Reviewed During Visit

During the visit, Scindia reviewed several major projects that are expected to contribute to Sikkim’s long-term development.

Among them were the Temi Tea Estate development project in Namchi, the under-construction Khangchendzonga State University campus at Tarku, and the Bhaleydunga Skywalk project being developed under the PM-DevINE scheme.

Furthermore, these projects aim to strengthen tourism, education, and economic activity while showcasing Sikkim’s unique natural and cultural heritage.

Focus on Sustainability and Biodiversity

Scindia also visited the Orchidarium at Saramsa and interacted with residents at MG Marg in Gangtok.

Additionally, he praised Sikkim’s achievements in biodiversity conservation and environmental protection. According to the minister, the state’s commitment to organic farming, ecological preservation, and sustainable development makes it a model for the Northeast and the rest of India.

Therefore, the newly announced package aligns with Sikkim’s long-term vision of balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
