The Fourth Council formation and oath-taking ceremony of the Gangtok Municipal Corporation took place at Deorali in Gangtok. A total of 20 newly elected councillors took oath in the presence of senior government officials. During the session, councillors unanimously elected Tshering Palden Bhutia as Mayor and Sara Lama as Deputy Mayor. The ceremony highlighted a smooth democratic process and strong political consensus. Officials also urged the new council to focus on public service and urban development.

Oath-Taking Ceremony Held in Gangtok

Authorities organised the oath-taking ceremony at the GMC Conference Hall in Deorali. All 20 newly elected councillors attended the event and formally assumed office.

Moreover, Municipal Returning Officer Tushar G Nikhare administered the oath. Several ministers, MLAs, and senior officials also attended the ceremony.


Unanimous Election of Mayor and Deputy Mayor

During the council meeting, councillors unanimously proposed Tshering Palden Bhutia as Mayor. She represents Ward No. 09 and belongs to the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM).

Similarly, councillors selected Sara Lama from Ward No. 12 (Arithang II) as Deputy Mayor. The council showed complete consensus in both elections.


Government Urges Responsible Governance

Jitendra Singh Raje, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Urban Development Department, congratulated the newly elected councillors. He encouraged them to serve the public with dedication and integrity.

Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of effective urban governance. He urged the council to focus on development, transparency, and citizen welfare.

The new GMC council now carries the responsibility of improving civic infrastructure and services in Gangtok. Leaders expect the council to address urban challenges such as sanitation, roads, and housing.
