The flood situation in Assam continues to remain grim as over four lakh people have been affected by the deluge across nine districts. Although water levels have started receding in some areas, the overall impact remains significant, according to an official from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Tragically, three lives have been lost in this year’s initial wave of flooding in different parts of the state, as reported by the ASDMA. The districts of Baksa, Barpeta, Darrang, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Udalguri are the most affected, with a total of 4,07,700 people impacted, as per the ASDMA’s report.
Efforts are underway to provide relief to the affected population. Currently, 101 relief camps have been set up in the affected districts, accommodating 81,352 individuals. Additionally, 119 relief distribution centers are operational in five districts. Unfortunately, the flood has submerged 1,118 villages, and approximately 8,469.56 hectares of crop area have been damaged across Assam, as stated by the ASDMA.
Massive erosion has also been observed in several districts, including Baksa, Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhubri, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, South Salmara, and Udalguri. Furthermore, Karimganj has reported incidents of landslides due to heavy rainfall. Floodwaters have caused damage to embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in Darrang, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Golaghat, Nalbari, Barpeta, Baksa, Bongaigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Udalguri, and Lakhimpur, as highlighted in the report.
The situation is especially dire in urban areas of Darrang district, where flooding has led to the inundation of several locations. The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark at Tezpur and Neamatighat, further exacerbating the situation.
Authorities are working tirelessly to assist those affected and provide necessary support. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with a focus on evacuating people to safer locations and providing them with shelter, food, and essential supplies. The state government, along with various agencies and volunteers, is actively engaged in mitigating the impact of the floods and ensuring the well-being of the affected population.
The recurring floods in Assam have become a major challenge for the state, causing widespread devastation and loss of life and property.
