India reported 1,690 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, with an active caseload of 19,613, according to data from the Union Health Ministry. The total number of cases in the country has now reached 4.49 crore, while the death toll stands at 5,31,736 with 12 new fatalities reported. Kerala reconciled some of these deaths.

The country’s recovery rate has reached 98.77%, with 4,44,25,250 people having recuperated from the disease so far. The case fatality rate was recorded at 1.18%.

The nationwide vaccination drive has administered 220.66 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines so far, according to the health ministry’s website.

In Delhi, 75 new cases and one fatality were reported on Wednesday, bringing the total case tally to 20,40,304, with 26,649 deaths. The positivity rate was recorded at 3.43%.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to declassify the Covid-19 pandemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, acknowledged that while the pandemic has been on a downward trend for over a year, thousands of people are still fighting for their lives and millions are suffering from post-Covid conditions.

Tedros stated that the emergency committee recommended ending the PHEIC proclamation, and he accepted the advice.
