In a stunning display of skill, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh emerged victorious at the World Chess Armageddon Asia & Oceania event, defeating former world rapid champion Nodirbek Abdusattorov in the final.

The 16-year-old Gukesh had to use his “extra life” after losing the second game, but he bounced back to win the following games and claim the title. The tournament also included big names like former world classical champion Vladimir Kramnik and Vidit Gujrathi.

Gukesh’s triumph is especially noteworthy as the tournament featured a different time control, with each match consisting of two blitz games and, if necessary, an Armageddon game. The Armageddon game is a variant of blitz chess that is used to determine a winner after a series of drawn games. The Indian Grandmaster’s win means that he and Abdusattorov have both earned a spot in Armageddon’s Grand Finale in September.

Following his victory, Gukesh expressed his happiness in a tweet and shared his experience of playing in the event. Former world champion Viswanathan Anand also congratulated Gukesh on his achievement, calling it an “excellent achievement” and a source of pride for India.
