North Korea launched a missile of intermediate or longer range on Thursday, according to reports from South Korea and Japan. Japanese authorities issued an alert for residents on the northern island of Hokkaido to take cover, but later retracted it, citing an error in the emergency warning system.

The missile was fired from near Pyongyang at 7:23 am local time and appeared to be aimed eastward at a high angle. Japan’s defense minister said the missile did not fall into Japanese territory and that further analysis was needed to determine the details of the launch.

The launch came just days after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for the strengthening of the country’s war deterrence in response to what Pyongyang perceives as aggressive moves by the United States.

The South Korean military is on high alert and coordinating with the US, while North Korea has criticized joint military exercises between the US and South Korea as increasing tensions.

North Korea’s missile launch is a cause for concern as it represents a potential threat to regional stability and international peace. The launch also comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with North Korea criticizing joint military exercises between the US and South Korea. The launch demonstrates North Korea’s continued pursuit of its missile and nuclear programs despite international sanctions and condemnation. It is important for all parties involved to engage in diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and work towards a peaceful resolution of the situation.
