A Kangpokpi candlelight vigil brought hundreds of people together on Tuesday evening, October 20, to mourn the killing of a Kuki civilian in Manipur. The gathering took place along National Highway-2, where residents demanded justice for the deceased and stronger protection for civilians.
The victim, Paolenmung Thangeo, was reportedly collecting wild bamboo shoots in a forested area when suspected gunmen opened fire. His death has raised fresh concerns about civilian safety and tensions in the region, which has experienced repeated incidents of violence.
Kangpokpi candlelight vigil honours the deceased
Residents gathered with candles to pay tribute to Thangeo, a father of six from P. Moulding village in Kangpokpi district. Participants expressed grief over his death and called for accountability for those responsible for the shooting.
According to the village authority, Thangeo had entered the forest early Tuesday morning with another villager, identified as Laldenga, from Molhoi village. The two men were reportedly collecting bamboo shoots when the attack occurred.
Thangeo sustained fatal injuries, while his companion reportedly escaped. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain a matter of investigation, and responsibility for the attack has not been independently established.
The gathering reflected the grief of local residents following the loss of a civilian during an ordinary livelihood activity. Moreover, the demand for justice highlighted concerns about the risks faced by people entering forested areas for food and household income.
Village authority alleges militant involvement
The P. Moulding village authority alleged that cadres linked to the National Socialist Council of Nagalim-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) and the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF-K) were involved in the attack. However, these allegations should not be treated as confirmed findings without further investigation.
Reports identified Thangeo as an unarmed civilian who had gone into the forest to collect bamboo shoots for his family. The incident occurred in the area between P. Moulding and Molhoi villages, according to reports published on Wednesday.
The killing came amid heightened tensions following another deadly attack in Manipur. On Monday, October 19, three Meitei civilians were killed and several others injured in a suspected militant attack near the boundary of Kangpokpi and Imphal East districts.
Although the incidents occurred within a short period, the available reports do not establish a direct connection between the two attacks. Therefore, investigators must establish the circumstances and responsibility for each incident separately.
Kangpokpi candlelight vigil follows shutdown call
The candlelight gathering came as the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), a Kuki-Zo organisation based in Kangpokpi, announced a 24-hour shutdown in the district. The shutdown was scheduled to begin at midnight on Tuesday, October 20, in protest against Thangeo’s killing.
The organisation demanded justice, accountability and better protection for the Kuki-Zo community. The shutdown announcement also reflected growing anger over civilian deaths and continuing insecurity in the district.
Meanwhile, the incident has placed renewed attention on the safety of residents who depend on forests and nearby agricultural areas for their daily needs. For many families, collecting forest produce forms part of their livelihood, making access to these areas important.
However, fear of armed attacks can restrict movement and disrupt ordinary activities. Such incidents also risk deepening mistrust between communities, particularly when responsibility remains disputed or unconfirmed.
Civilian safety remains a pressing concern
The Kangpokpi candlelight vigil underscored the wider concerns surrounding civilian security in Manipur. Residents in affected areas continue to face uncertainty as violence and allegations involving armed groups create an atmosphere of fear.
The latest killing also highlights the importance of establishing facts through a credible investigation. Authorities need to determine how the shooting occurred, identify those responsible and take appropriate legal action based on the evidence.
Additionally, effective security measures could help protect civilians travelling through vulnerable areas. Timely information, appropriate patrols and cooperation between local communities and law enforcement may help reduce risks.
At the same time, public responses to violence require care to prevent further tensions. Clear communication about verified developments can help counter rumours and discourage retaliatory action.
Kangpokpi candlelight vigil renews call for peace
The Kangpokpi candlelight vigil served as a public expression of mourning and a demand for justice following Thangeo’s death. For his family and community, the immediate priority remains accountability and the ability to carry out everyday activities without fear.
The incident also reinforces the need for authorities to address violence through impartial investigations and effective civilian protection. Identifying the perpetrators and establishing the motive could help prevent speculation from worsening existing tensions.
Furthermore, community leaders and security officials face the challenge of maintaining calm while responding to public anger. Any response must protect civilians, uphold the law and avoid actions that could trigger further violence.
As Manipur confronts another episode of bloodshed, residents in Kangpokpi are seeking answers and reassurance. The vigil has brought their grief into public view, while their demands underline a broader need for safety, accountability and lasting peace across the state.
