The Kerala High Court has taken suo motu action and initiated a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) to investigate the violation of rules that led to the tragic boat accident in Tanur. The incident resulted in the death of 22 people, including women and children, when a houseboat carrying over 30 passengers capsized and sank near Tuvalthiram beach in the Malappuram district on Sunday.

In addition to the PIL, the state police have charged the owner of the boat with murder, following widespread criticism and demands for action from various quarters, including the opposition. The Kerala government has responded by stepping up the investigation into the accident.

The tragedy has once again brought into sharp focus the issue of safety regulations for boats and other vessels in Kerala. The state is a popular tourist destination, and boat rides are a major attraction, particularly in the backwaters of Alappuzha and Kumarakom.

Boat accidents are unfortunately not uncommon in the region, and there have been calls for stricter enforcement of safety guidelines and regulations. The latest incident has prompted renewed calls for action and accountability from the government and other stakeholders.

As the investigation continues, there is hope that measures will be put in place to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. In the meantime, the families and loved ones of the victims continue to grieve, and the entire state mourns the loss of innocent lives.
