Assam Police recovered 10.9 kilograms of opium during a swift operation in Khatkhati, Karbi Anglong. Officers arrested two individuals near the Assam–Nagaland border. This latest Khatkhati drug haul underscores the region’s increasing vulnerability to narcotics trafficking.

Police Act Swiftly on Border Intel

After receiving a credible tip-off, police set up a checkpoint near the Khatkhati forest gate, a known route for smugglers. During inspections, they stopped a vehicle with a Nagaland number plate. Officers searched it thoroughly and found the opium hidden in secret compartments beneath the rear seat.

The seized opium, neatly packed in plastic, was ready for distribution.

Two Carriers from Arunachal Nabbed

Authorities identified the arrested men as Nokchai Wangsu and Apang Wangsu, both residents of Arunachal Pradesh. They admitted to transporting the drugs from Ukhrul in Manipur, planning to deliver the consignment through Assam.

Police booked the duo under the NDPS Act and moved them to custody for further questioning.

Khatkhati Emerges as Drug Corridor

The Khatkhati drug haul revealed the town’s growing role as a transit hub for drugs originating in Manipur. Its forested terrain and porous borders make the area ideal for traffickers. In fact, Karbi Anglong has seen five similar incidents this year alone.

Officials believe the opium seized could be part of a larger network operating across state lines. Assam Police have already begun coordinating with counterparts in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh to uncover more leads.

Police Leadership Commends Effort

Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP), G P Singh, praised the team’s effectiveness. He said this operation was another milestone in the state’s ongoing war against drugs.

“Every major bust weakens the supply chain. Our officers are on high alert, and we will continue these crackdowns,” Singh stated.

Community Awareness Crucial

In the wake of the seizure, local authorities urged residents to report suspicious activities. They also emphasized the importance of awareness programs in schools and villages near border zones.

Karbi Anglong SP Rahul Sinha highlighted the role of youth and community groups in preventing the spread of narcotics. “If we want to break this chain, public cooperation must grow stronger,” he said.

This Khatkhati drug haul marks a serious blow to drug traffickers operating in the region. Assam Police remain committed to securing vulnerable border areas and stopping the drug trade before it reaches urban centers.

Sustained enforcement, along with community involvement, can ensure that Karbi Anglong doesn’t become a permanent passage for narcotics.
