Main Developments

In a significant development, 11 officers from the Manipur State Forest Service have secured promotion to the Indian Forest Service (IFS). The move highlights their consistent performance and professional competence.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change issued the official order after completing the selection process. The ministry approved the Select List for the year 2023.

Moreover, the Union Public Service Commission cleared the list under the provisions of the Indian Forest Service (Appointment by Promotion) Regulations, 1966. This step ensured that the promotions followed due procedure and transparency.

List of Promoted Officers

The Select List 2023 includes Dr. Leishangthem Jeeceelee, Napolean Rongmei, Waikhom Romabai, and Laishram Gitla.

Additionally, S.L. Niangthianhoi, Mahamuda Begum, and Elangbam Nirmala Chanu feature on the list. Dr. Rebika Soibam Chanu, Chinpilhing Kipgen, D. John Sha, and Vahneichong Singson have also earned promotion.

Why It Matters

The Indian Forest Service is one of India’s premier All India Services. Officers in this cadre manage forests, wildlife, and environmental resources across the country.

Therefore, these promotions will strengthen forest governance in Manipur. At the same time, they acknowledge the contribution of state forest officers who have served in challenging conditions.

Impact on Administration

With more officers joining the IFS cadre, Manipur is likely to see improved forest management and policy implementation. In addition, the promotions will help fill existing vacancies under the promotion quota.

Furthermore, experienced officers from the state cadre will now contribute at a broader national level. This transition can enhance coordination between state and central forest authorities.

Location Context

Manipur is rich in biodiversity and forest resources. Hence, strengthening forest administration in the state remains crucial for conservation efforts in Northeast India.
