Held in the scenic Shirui village, the annual festival is dedicated to the endangered Shirui Lily — a flower found only in the hills of Manipur. This year’s celebration not only honored ecological beauty but also emphasized the state’s rich ethnic heritage and potential for eco-tourism.

Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh’s active presence and remarks marked a defining moment at this year’s celebration. In his address, he highlighted the importance of unity among communities. “The Manipur Speaker Shirui Lily Festival visit symbolizes our government’s commitment to promoting harmony and celebrating our shared identity,” he stated.

His speech emphasized how cultural events like this help bridge the divide between valley and hill communities. He also acknowledged the local Tangkhul Naga tribe’s efforts in preserving both their environment and traditions.

The Speaker’s visit also featured interactions with tribal elders, schoolchildren, and entrepreneurs, strengthening connections with the local population.

Festival Promotes Eco-Tourism and Sustainability

The Manipur Speaker Shirui Lily Festival event also highlighted environmental issues. Given the ecological importance of the Shirui Lily, government and local groups used the platform to promote eco-tourism and conservation.

Thokchom Satyabrata Singh stressed the need for sustainable tourism practices. “We must protect our heritage and environment. Festivals like Shirui Lily show how tourism and tradition can grow together,” he remarked during an eco-dialogue panel.

Environmentalists and tourism officials presented plans to enhance infrastructure in Ukhrul district while preserving its natural beauty. These include regulated trekking paths, biodiversity zones, and eco-lodges.

Showcasing Unity Through Culture and Performance

The four-day event featured music, folk dance, indigenous fashion shows, and craft exhibitions. Performers from various Naga tribes and other ethnic groups from across Manipur took part, reflecting the unity in diversity theme.

The Manipur Speaker Shirui Lily Festival also included a “Unity Run,” where locals from different communities participated in a symbolic race promoting peace and togetherness.

A highlight of the festival was the Shirui Lily Queen beauty pageant, judged not just on beauty but also cultural knowledge and environmental awareness. Local women from different districts participated with pride and confidence.

Boost for Local Economy and Youth Engagement

Local vendors, artists, and home-stay owners experienced a boost in income as thousands of visitors thronged the festival grounds. Food stalls offered traditional dishes, while stalls showcased handicrafts, handloom products, and herbal remedies.

The Manipur Speaker Shirui Lily Festival also provided a platform for youth engagement. Young volunteers from across the state managed logistics, guided tourists, and organized cultural programs. Their participation showcased the growing interest in event management and tourism entrepreneurship among the younger generation.

Ukhrul’s Deputy Commissioner, Kengoo Zuringla, praised the coordination between local administration and community groups. “This festival is proof of what we can achieve when we work together,” she stated.

Political Leaders Endorse Regional Harmony

Alongside the Manipur Speaker, several MLAs and ministers attended the event. Their presence showed political consensus around cultural unity and environmental awareness.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh extended his greetings via video message, stating, “The Manipur Speaker Shirui Lily Festival visit reflects our collective pride in our heritage. Manipur’s strength lies in its unity.”

Many political analysts believe the Speaker’s active involvement signals the government’s intention to prioritize hill-valley integration through cultural diplomacy.

Challenges and the Way Forward

Despite the success, the festival faced challenges like temporary traffic congestion, lack of enough accommodations, and intermittent power supply. However, officials have promised to address these in the coming years.

Plans are underway to develop Shirui as a year-round eco-tourism hub. Authorities are considering building a biodiversity museum, upgrading the road network, and setting up information centers for tourists.

Locals have also requested better support for preserving the rare Shirui Lily, which faces habitat threats due to human encroachment and climate change. Environmental groups have proposed a community-led preservation fund.

The Manipur Speaker Shirui Lily Festival presence has made the 2025 edition of the festival both culturally symbolic and politically significant. It has reaffirmed the festival’s role as a catalyst for harmony, eco-awareness, and economic development.

More than a celebration of a flower, the event has become a reflection of Manipur’s vision — one of shared heritage, responsible tourism, and inclusive growth. As the state steps into the future, festivals like this remind its people of their roots and collective strength.
