Detailed Report

The Meghalaya government has taken a clear step to address public concerns by removing Lumpongdeng Island from the Umiam Lake luxury resort plan. The decision came after strong objections from local communities and traditional bodies.

Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong chaired a meeting with representatives of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong of Ri Bhoi district. During the discussion, community leaders raised environmental and cultural concerns. As a result, the government acted quickly to revise the project.

Subsequently, Joint Secretary for Tourism C S Khongwir issued an official letter confirming the change. The government will now amend its agreement with Umiam Hotel Pvt Ltd and fully exclude the 36-acre island from the project.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Wailadmiki Shylla stressed that the government always aimed to promote “experiential tourism” rather than heavy construction on the island. However, the administration chose to go further and remove the island entirely to maintain public trust.

At the same time, the government will continue the luxury resort project on the 30-acre Umiam Orchid Lake Resort property. Officials believe this approach will attract investment while also creating jobs for local youth.

Moreover, Shylla rejected claims that the government acted under pressure. Instead, he explained that the decision reflects responsible governance and respect for people’s voices. He added that public cooperation remains essential for long-term development.

On the other hand, the Green Tech Foundation has intensified its protest. The group continues a hunger strike and demands the complete cancellation of the project, citing environmental risks.
