Truck owners in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, have announced an indefinite strike starting April 24 after failed negotiations with Star Cement. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) accused the company of unfair truck loading allocations, stating that it assigns only a few trucks daily instead of the agreed quota. Despite earlier agreements facilitated by district authorities, both sides failed to reach a resolution. The strike will likely disrupt transportation along National Highway 6. Truckers have warned that they will continue their protest until the company meets their demands.

Truckers Move Ahead with Strike Decision

Truck owners in Meghalaya have decided to launch an indefinite strike after negotiations with Star Cement failed. The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing the East Jaintia Hills Truck Owners Transport Association and the Jaintia Hills Truck Owners Association, took the decision during a meeting at the district headquarters.

JAC leaders stated that the company did not address their concerns during the discussion. As a result, they confirmed that the strike will begin on April 24 without further delay.

Dispute Over Truck Loading Allocation

JAC Chairman Biangshwa Shylla accused the company of allocating far fewer trucks than agreed. He said the company currently assigns only three to four trucks per day, while the associations demand a total of 18 trucks daily.

Shylla also pointed out that earlier agreements, made in the presence of district authorities, clearly defined the allocation terms. However, the company has not followed those commitments, which triggered dissatisfaction among truckers.

Talks Fail to Deliver Solution

During the latest meeting, company representatives asked for more time to consult senior management. However, they did not present any concrete plan or assurance to resolve the issue.

The JAC rejected the request for further delay and decided to proceed with the strike. Leaders emphasized that truckers have already waited long enough for a fair resolution.

Impact on Transport and Supply Chain

The strike will halt truck movements for loading at the company’s site. This action will disrupt transportation along National Highway 6, a key route for goods movement in the region.

Industry observers expect the disruption to affect supply chains, especially in the cement and construction sectors. The longer the strike continues, the greater the impact on regional trade.
