Focus on First 1,000 Days

Conrad Sangma launched Mission 1000 Days on Tuesday in Meghalaya. The programme targets the period from conception to two years of age. Experts consider this phase critical for a child’s growth and brain development.

The government designed the initiative to tackle malnutrition and improve early health outcomes. It also aims to ensure better care for both mothers and infants.

Progress in Maternal Health

Sangma said his government has prioritised maternal health since 2018. Focused policies and improved healthcare access have delivered strong results. The state has reduced maternal mortality by nearly 50 percent.

He credited frontline workers and better healthcare systems for this progress. He stressed the need to sustain these efforts in the coming years.

₹127 Crore Investment for Nutrition and Care

The state government has committed ₹127 crore to the programme. Authorities will use the funds to strengthen nutrition support and services.

The initiative will run awareness campaigns across urban and rural areas. It will also train ASHA and Anganwadi workers to improve service delivery.

Officials will distribute mother-and-baby kits to support early care. These kits will help families meet essential health and nutrition needs.

Community Participation Key to Success

The programme encourages strong community involvement. Sangma urged local leaders and civil society groups to take part actively.

He also invited faith-based organisations to support the initiative. He said collective efforts can create lasting impact.

The Chief Minister wants Mission 1000 Days to grow into a “people’s movement.” He believes community ownership will improve outcomes.

Aiming for Healthier Future

Mission 1000 Days aims to give every child a healthy start. It focuses on prevention and early intervention.

Officials expect the programme to reduce malnutrition rates. It will also improve overall health indicators in Meghalaya.

The initiative aligns with national goals for maternal and child health. It also supports long-term development through better nutrition.
