Shillong: The North Eastern Council (NEC) completed development projects worth ₹28.08 crore and released ₹7.86 crore for ongoing initiatives across Meghalaya in July and August 2026. The projects cover healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, tourism, livelihoods and environmental conservation. A major achievement includes the installation of a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital at a cost of ₹6.69 crore.
The NEC also supported school infrastructure, startup hubs, tourism facilities and community development programmes. The council outlined the projects and funding in its July-August 2026 release issued from Shillong.

MRI Facility Strengthens Healthcare in Tura
One of the most significant projects completed during the period was the installation of a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine at Tura Civil Hospital.
The NEC funded the facility with ₹6.69 crore. The new MRI service is expected to improve access to advanced diagnostic care for people in the Garo Hills region.
Previously, patients requiring specialised imaging could face the need to travel outside the region. Therefore, the new facility could reduce travel and improve access to diagnostic services locally.
Education Gets Major NEC Support
Education also received significant attention during the two-month period.
The NEC released ₹4.90 crore for the construction of school buildings at eight Ramakrishna Mission schools. These schools are located in Laidiengsai, Nongkynrih, Mawrah, Pomsohmen, Laitryngew, Wahlong, Nongjri Pynursla and Nongjri Nartiang.
Meanwhile, the council completed upgrades at Ramakrishna Mission schools in Jalapet, Laitlynkot, Laitlyndop, Mylliem, Umploh and Mawkynriew.
The combined sanctioned cost for these upgrades stood at ₹13.14 crore under the Focused Development of Deprived Areas programme.
Support for Youth and Entrepreneurs
The NEC also released ₹2.50 crore for the ongoing Integrated Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Centre. The project has a total sanctioned cost of ₹10 crore.
The centre aims to strengthen skills and livelihood opportunities for tribal youth, women entrepreneurs and rural communities.
In addition, the NEC allocated ₹1.17 crore to upgrade seven PRIME HUBS across Meghalaya. These centres provide incubation and mentoring support to aspiring entrepreneurs.
Tourism and Environmental Projects
Tourism infrastructure also received NEC support. The council allocated ₹46.50 lakh for facilities at Laitlynkot (Lamlyer) in East Khasi Hills.
The project aims to promote community-led ecotourism and create local livelihood opportunities.
Furthermore, the NEC completed a ₹3.69-crore water hyacinth craft cluster livelihood centre on August 25. The project includes design, innovation and training workshops to support local livelihoods.
Community Development in Ri-Bhoi
On July 6, the NEC completed a ₹2.94-crore Community Development Programme for Tiwa (Lalung) communities in Ri-Bhoi district.
The programme focuses on soil conservation, protection of natural spring-water catchments and preservation of forest biodiversity.
NEC Funds Regional Initiatives
Beyond Meghalaya-specific projects, the NEC also disbursed ₹16.22 crore to regional agencies, universities and technical institutions.
The funding covers several initiatives, including overseas placement programmes in Japan for Northeast youth, Functional Hindi courses by IIM Shillong and a study of road connectivity developed after 2014.
The council also supported a publication documenting the life and legacy of Padma Shri Major Bob Khathing.
