Warren Newton, Vice Consul, presented the award to Dr Vanlalsiama at Hotel Regency in Aizawl on September 7.
The recognition honoured the medical care provided to US citizen Collin Mayfield after he suffered injuries in Myanmar. Mayfield received treatment and surgery at Ebenezer Medical Center before returning to the United States. Aizawl Doctor Receives First Award in India
Dr Vanlalsiama Chhangte has received the Citizen Liaison Volunteer of the Year Award instituted by the US Consulate General in Kolkata.
The award marks the first time the recognition has been presented in India. Dr Vanlalsiama has therefore become the inaugural recipient of the award in the country.
Warren Newton, Vice Consul, presented the honour at Hotel Regency in Aizawl on September 7. The recognition included a memento and a certificate signed by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor.
Medical Assistance to US Citizen
The award recognised the medical assistance provided by Ebenezer Medical Center to US citizen Collin Mayfield.
Mayfield arrived in Mizoram on December 1, 2025, after sustaining injuries in Myanmar. He received treatment at Ebenezer Medical Center for around a month.
During his treatment, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Lalrinliana Varte performed surgery on Mayfield. After recovering, Mayfield was able to return to the United States.

Representatives of the US Consulate said the Citizen Liaison Volunteer of the Year Award was being introduced in India for the first time.

Dr Vanlalsiama also said recognition from an international institution was encouraging for the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals working at the centre.
He added that Ebenezer Medical Center would continue contributing to the development of healthcare services in Mizoram.
