Mizoram Launches Statewide Cleanliness Competition
UD&PA Minister K Sapdanga launched the initiative and said it would help develop a culture of cleanliness among schoolchildren.
According to Sapdanga, the competition will encourage students to make hygiene a regular part of their daily lives. Moreover, the programme aims to build a long-term sense of responsibility towards clean surroundings.
Although the competition offers cash prizes, Sapdanga said its larger purpose is to create lasting behavioural change among students.
Students Encouraged to Become Cleanliness Leaders
Sapdanga described cleanliness and hygiene as important indicators of development and progress.
He said the initiative would encourage students to become leaders in maintaining clean schools, homes and communities. Therefore, children will play an important role in building a healthier environment for future generations.
The minister also stressed that cleanliness remains a shared responsibility. Both children and adults, he said, must contribute to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
Teachers Asked to Lead by Example
School Education Minister Vanlalthlana also attended the launch programme. He highlighted the growing awareness among Mizo youth about cleanliness.
Recently, young people have voluntarily organised clean-up drives in neglected areas. Vanlalthlana urged residents to continue such efforts and help maintain Mizoram’s reputation for cleanliness.
Furthermore, he called on teachers and school staff to lead by example. He said their efforts could encourage students to adopt better hygiene practices.
Government Promises Support for Green Schools
The School Education Department has assured schools of all possible support for successfully implementing the Green Schools League.
The competition will operate at three levels — block, district and state. As a result, schools across Mizoram will have an opportunity to participate and showcase their cleanliness and environmental initiatives.
