Aizawl, Mizoram: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced an ambitious economic target to increase the state’s contribution to India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current 0.1 per cent to 1 per cent by 2047. The state also aims to raise its per capita income to ₹16 lakh within the same period.
Speaking at the Youth Entrepreneurship Summit (YES) 2026 in Aizawl on November 3, Lalduhoma said the government was working to transform Mizoram through entrepreneurship, agricultural development, innovation and industrial growth.
Organised by the Mizoram Entrepreneurs’ Chamber (MEC), the summit focused on encouraging young people to establish businesses and contribute to the state’s economic development.
The Chief Minister said Mizoram accounts for approximately 0.9 per cent of India’s population but contributes only around 0.1 per cent to the national economy. Therefore, the government aims to increase this contribution tenfold over the next two decades.

Mizoram Focuses on Agriculture and Entrepreneurship
Lalduhoma said the government had already started implementing development initiatives at the grassroots level to achieve its 2047 economic vision.
These initiatives include support prices for agricultural produce and insurance schemes for crops and livestock. Moreover, the government wants to strengthen rural livelihoods and encourage people to explore business opportunities.
The Chief Minister highlighted the Chief Minister’s Special Package under the state’s flagship Bana Kaih scheme. The programme provides financial assistance to individuals who want to establish or expand small businesses.
Additionally, a separate loan component supports entrepreneurs planning larger business ventures.
Lalduhoma said officials provide assistance based on the merit of each project rather than favouritism or discrimination. He also claimed that no beneficiary who had received a loan under the scheme had defaulted on repayment so far.
He described Bana Kaih as an effective platform for aspiring entrepreneurs and a key part of the state’s economic development strategy.
Government Promotes Start-ups and Innovation
The Mizoram government is also introducing several initiatives to encourage innovation and support new businesses.
According to Lalduhoma, these initiatives include:
- Innovation Facility Centre
- Innovation Awards
- Venture Capital Fund
- Mizoram Start-up Mission
Through these programmes, the government aims to help young entrepreneurs develop innovative business ideas and access financial support.
Meanwhile, the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector is gaining momentum across the state.
The Chief Minister highlighted the growing number of young entrepreneurs establishing food-processing units that use locally produced agricultural goods.
Mizoram Encourages Local Fruit-Based Industries
Lalduhoma also highlighted emerging opportunities in fruit-based industries. He said authorities had issued several permits this year for producing fruit beer using locally grown fruits.
Such initiatives could create additional markets for local agricultural products while providing employment opportunities for young people.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister urged young entrepreneurs to take advantage of government schemes and encouraged consumers to purchase locally manufactured products.
He said stronger support for local businesses would help build a sustainable economy and reduce dependence on products from outside the state.
