Death Toll Climbs as Rescue Teams Continue Search

The flood and landslide situation in Nagaland worsened after authorities recovered five more bodies from Mon district. As a result, the death toll has risen to nine, according to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).

Meanwhile, rescue teams continue searching for four people who remain missing. Officials are carrying out operations in several affected areas despite difficult weather conditions.

Mon District Suffers the Greatest Damage

Mon district remains the worst-affected area in the state. Notably, all nine reported fatalities occurred in the district.

According to the NSDMA, five people lost their lives in landslides at Shantham Ward in Mon town. In addition, heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in several nearby areas, causing widespread destruction.

Rescue Operations Continue in Naginimora

In Naginimora, rescue teams saved four people who were swept away by flash floods.

One rescued person suffered fractures, while the remaining three sustained minor injuries. Fortunately, emergency responders reached the victims in time and shifted them to safety.

More Than 7,400 Residents Affected

According to preliminary reports, at least 7,460 people have been affected across Nagaland. Furthermore, disaster management officials expect this number to increase as assessment teams reach remote locations.

Authorities are also conducting detailed surveys to determine the full impact of the disaster.

Homes, Villages and Livestock Damaged

The NSDMA reported that 64 houses have been damaged across 93 villages in 10 districts.

Moreover, the disaster has claimed the lives of at least 83 animals, including 15 mithuns, 13 cattle, and 53 pigs. These losses have affected many families who depend on livestock for their livelihood.

Shamator and Other Districts Face Severe Impact

Apart from Mon, Shamator has recorded the highest number of affected residents.

Nearly 7,000 people from six villages in the district have been impacted by landslides. Similarly, Tuensang reported 201 affected residents across 12 villages, while landslides hit around 30 villages in Zunheboto, affecting 26 people.

Heavy Rain Disrupts Normal Life

Continuous rainfall has damaged roads, public infrastructure, agricultural land, and essential services across several parts of Nagaland.

Consequently, transportation and daily activities remain disrupted in many areas. Authorities have advised residents living in landslide-prone and low-lying regions to remain alert as more rain is expected.

Officials also warned that the overall damage could increase because assessment surveys are still underway.

Location Context

Nagaland is one of Northeast India’s hilly states, where intense monsoon rainfall frequently triggers landslides and flash floods. Therefore, timely disaster response and continuous monitoring are essential to protect lives, infrastructure, and rural communities during the rainy season.
