The six-lane expressway will sharply improve road connectivity between Guwahati and Silchar. At present, the journey takes over eight hours. The new highway will reduce travel time to around four-and-a-half hours.

Faster Connectivity for Assam

The Guwahati–Silchar expressway ranks among Assam’s biggest infrastructure projects. The state government has finalized the tenders and secured wildlife board clearance. Officials have also accelerated land acquisition. The government will begin construction soon.

The project will strengthen links between the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barak Valley. For decades, difficult terrain slowed travel between the two regions. The new corridor will ease movement for commuters, transporters, and businesses.

Improved road access will boost trade and tourism. It will also help industries move goods faster across the state. The expressway supports the Centre’s push to upgrade highways across the Northeast.

Flyover to Ease Silchar Traffic

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will also open a major flyover in Silchar. The structure will reduce traffic congestion in key city areas. It will also improve road safety and daily commuting conditions.

Local authorities expect the flyover to streamline traffic flow and cut travel delays within Silchar.

Greenfield Airport Plan Advances

Chief Minister Sarma shared updates on the proposed greenfield airport in Silchar. The state has secured environmental clearance for the project. The government now seeks cabinet approval.

Sarma said the cabinet could clear the proposal by March. If elections delay the process, the government will take it up soon after the polls. The airport will expand aviation capacity in southern Assam and meet rising passenger demand.

Together, the expressway and airport aim to transform Silchar into a key transport hub in the region.

Political Spotlight Ahead of Polls

Modi’s visit comes as Assam gears up for assembly elections. The BJP plans to announce candidates shortly after the Prime Minister’s tour. Political activity has already intensified across the state.

The ruling party continues to highlight infrastructure growth as a major achievement. Leaders say large-scale projects reflect their focus on development and connectivity.

The March 14 visit will place Barak Valley at the centre of both development and political attention. The launch of the ₹22,000-crore expressway signals a major step in Assam’s infrastructure expansion and economic growth strategy.
