Sangai Festival is a strategic platform to boost tourism, not just a celebration: Manipur Tourism Director
SHARE

The Sangai Festival tourism boost gained strong focus during a workshop at the Manipur Press Club, where Tourism Director Lourembam Bikram spoke about the event’s wider purpose. He said the festival is not simply a celebration but a strategic platform that can push Manipur’s tourism sector forward. According to him, the festival brings attention to the state’s unique culture, natural beauty and rich traditions in a way few other events do.

During the workshop, titled “Tourism Potential in Manipur,” Bikram explained that the event acts as an effective gateway for promoting Manipur at national and international levels. The programme was organised jointly by the Directorate of Tourism and the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union.

Festival offers more than cultural entertainment

Bikram stressed that the Sangai Festival serves multiple roles. It entertains visitors, but it also plays a critical part in shaping the state’s tourism branding. Tourists experience traditional dances, indigenous crafts, adventure activities, local food and eco-tourism attractions in a single space. Because of this variety, they form a deeper interest in exploring more of Manipur later.

Moreover, the festival supports the state’s long-term tourism goals. It creates market visibility, encourages travel operators to promote the region and inspires visitors to return with family and friends. As a result, the festival contributes far beyond its duration.

Need to tap Manipur’s wide tourism potential

The Tourism Director highlighted that Manipur has enormous untapped tourism resources. The state offers scenic lakes, mountain ranges, rare wildlife, heritage villages and ancient cultural practices. However, many of these attractions remain lesser-known due to limited publicity. Bikram believes the Sangai Festival can bridge this gap by showcasing the state’s strengths to a wider audience.

Additionally, tourism brings direct benefits to local communities. Artisans, performers, food vendors and small business owners gain exposure during the festival. Many earn more during this period than they do throughout the rest of the year. Because of this, the festival’s impact extends into rural livelihoods and community growth.

Media plays a central role in tourism development

During the event, Bikram underlined the importance of media in shaping Manipur’s tourism image. Effective reporting can attract visitors and correct misconceptions. He encouraged journalists to highlight positive stories about culture, nature and community initiatives. Furthermore, he urged them to explore destinations beyond the main festival sites so that readers can learn about lesser-known but equally appealing places.

He noted that responsible reporting can inspire curiosity and trust among travellers. With more balanced coverage, Manipur can present itself as a safe, culturally rich and welcoming destination.

Collaboration key to strengthening the sector

Bikram said that growth in tourism requires teamwork. Government departments, travel agencies, community groups and the media must work together for sustained progress. When all stakeholders move in the same direction, the state can build better infrastructure, promote destinations effectively and improve visitor experiences.

He also emphasised the need for training. Local guides, hospitality workers and entrepreneurs should receive skill development support. With better training, tourists receive higher-quality services, which leads to positive reviews and repeat visits.

Sangai Festival reflects identity and heritage

The festival carries deep cultural meaning for the people of Manipur. Named after the rare and graceful Sangai deer, it reflects the state’s connection to nature and conservation. The symbol also reinforces the need to preserve wildlife and traditional practices.

Performances during the festival, including classical dances, community rituals and indigenous art displays, help retain cultural identity. Younger generations learn about their heritage through these presentations. Because of this cultural value, the festival strengthens both pride and unity.

Future editions expected to focus more on tourism promotion

Bikram shared that future editions of the Sangai Festival will continue to focus on tourism expansion. The Directorate of Tourism plans to improve visitor facilities, create more interactive experiences and build stronger platforms for entrepreneurs. These steps, he said, will help the festival grow into a major national attraction.

Many workshop participants agreed that the festival has the potential to draw far more tourists in the coming years. They believe strategic marketing and better infrastructure will support this vision.

Conclusion

The Sangai Festival tourism boost remains central to Manipur’s tourism strategy. Lourembam Bikram’s message was clear: the festival is not just entertainment but a long-term investment in the state’s future. With proper collaboration, responsible media coverage and continuous improvement, the Sangai Festival can help Manipur emerge as an important tourism destination in the region.
