Introduction
In a shocking revelation, the Gurugram police have apprehended two snake charmers who were allegedly using reptiles to rob and terrorize motorists commuting between Delhi and Gurugram. The suspects, identified as Rohit Nath (22) and Sakib Nath (26), were arrested from Ghata Road in Gurugram’s Sector 55 on Saturday. The charmers reportedly posed as priests and used non-venomous snakes to instil fear and steal from unsuspecting commuters.
The modus operandi of the duo involved approaching vehicles halted at traffic signals, primarily auto-rickshaws, and cars. They would then thrust the snakes through car windows or into auto-rickshaws, causing panic among the occupants. Taking advantage of the chaos, they would forcibly take away belongings from the frightened commuters.
Victim Narrates the Crime
The arrest followed a complaint filed by a victim named Sadya Wani (36), who detailed her harrowing experience with the criminals. According to Wani, she was traveling in an auto-rickshaw near Sushant Estates in Sector 52 on Friday morning. At a traffic signal, the two suspects, dressed as priests, approached her and demanded money. In a shocking turn of events, the snake charmers unleashed the snakes on her, forcing her to open her wallet. They managed to steal ₹2,000 before making their escape.
The incident left Wani terrified, prompting her to report the incident to the police. An FIR (First Information Report) was registered under sections 34 (common intention) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. The police investigation quickly led to the apprehension of the snake charmers.
Upon their arrest, two non-venomous snakes were seized from the possession of the suspects. These snakes were handed over to wildlife authorities for appropriate action. It has been revealed that the duo had been involved in similar cases before, having targeted commuters in a similar fashion last year. They were also linked to a previous theft case.
Inspector Rajender Singh, the station house officer of the Sector 53 police station, stated that the suspects would frequently travel between Delhi and Gurugram, robbing unsuspecting commuters at different locations within the Millennium City. The police are currently investigating whether the snake charmers were also involved in similar cases in Delhi.
