The first incident occurred on a Mumbai-Ranchi IndiGo flight, numbered 6E 5093, which made an unscheduled landing at Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur due to a passenger’s severe medical condition. The 62-year-old male passenger, identified as D Tiwari, was reported to be suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and tuberculosis. During the flight, Tiwari experienced a critical medical episode, vomiting blood on board. The pilot took a swift decision to divert to Nagpur, where the passenger was rushed to a government medical college. Tragically, despite the medical team’s best efforts, D Tiwari was declared brought dead upon arrival.

Loss of life due to Health Condition

Aejaz Shami, the DGM of Branding and Communications at KIMS Hospital in Nagpur, confirmed the passenger’s pre-existing health conditions and stated, “He was brought dead to the KIMS hospital. His body was taken to Government Medical College and Hospital for further procedures.”

Just days prior to this incident, another distressing event unfolded involving an IndiGo pilot. Captain Manoj Subramanyam, aged 40, collapsed at a boarding gate at Nagpur airport just before he was set to operate the Nagpur-Pune flight (6E135). Unfortunately, despite the emergency team’s efforts to revive him through CPR, Captain Subramanyam did not respond and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The preliminary cause of death was identified as a “sudden cardiac arrest.”

This unsettling incident came shortly after another pilot’s death, this time involving a senior Qatar Airways pilot. He had worked with SpiceJet and Alliance Air in the past and passed away due to cardiac arrest while on board a Delhi-Doha flight as a passenger.

IndiGo Airlines issued a statement expressing condolences and offering support to the affected families. “IndiGo flight 6E 5093, operating from Mumbai to Ranchi was diverted to Nagpur due to a medical emergency on board. The passenger was offloaded and was rushed to the hospital for further medical assistance. Unfortunately, the passenger did not survive. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones,” the statement read.

Conclusion

These incidents underscore the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies, even within the aviation industry, and serve as a reminder of the critical importance of immediate medical attention and preparedness during air travel.
