Historic Medical Achievement

Doctors in Tripura performed two kidney transplants on consecutive days for the first time. The procedures took place at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital.

This achievement marks the sixth and seventh kidney transplants in the state. Earlier, doctors conducted such surgeries individually. The back-to-back operations show improved medical capacity.

Details of the Two Surgeries

The sixth transplant took place on March 30. A 36-year-old patient from Kalsi in South Tripura received a kidney from his 33-year-old childhood friend. The surgery lasted six hours, from 9 am to 3 pm.

The seventh transplant followed on March 31. A 33-year-old patient from Champaknagar received a kidney from his 59-year-old father. Doctors completed the procedure in five hours, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Patients in Stable Condition

Hospital sources confirmed that both donors and recipients remain stable. Medical teams are monitoring them round the clock to ensure recovery.

Doctors expressed confidence in the patients’ progress. They credited teamwork and careful planning for the success of both surgeries.

Expert Team and Collaboration

Specialists from nephrology and urology departments led the procedures. Anaesthetists and trained technicians supported them throughout.

Experts from Shija Hospital and Research Institute also joined the team. Senior nursing staff supervised the operations with a dedicated support team.

Growing Healthcare Strength in Tripura

Officials said the achievement reflects the state’s focus on improving healthcare services. Organ transplantation facilities in Tripura have developed steadily in recent years.

The first kidney transplant in the state took place on July 8, 2024. Doctors completed the fifth transplant on November 4, 2025. With these latest surgeries, the state continues to strengthen its medical capabilities.

Why This Matters

Tripura is emerging as a growing healthcare hub in Northeast India. Advanced procedures like kidney transplants reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state.

Improved local treatment options also make healthcare more accessible and affordable.
