Nagaland Voter Discrepancies: Congress Seeks Checks Now

Nagaland voter discrepancies have drawn fresh attention after the Congress raised concerns over 1,57,752 entries not covered by enumeration forms during the state’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party has called for verification to establish the reasons behind the missing entries and protect eligible voters’ rights.

The issue gained prominence on October 27, when Congress leaders highlighted figures from the ongoing review of voter lists. The Election Department’s published data identifies several categories of entries that were not carried into the draft electoral roll, while the party has sought greater clarity and further checks.

Nagaland Voter Discrepancies Raise Questions

The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has questioned the difference between the state’s pre-revision electorate and the number of enumeration forms collected during the exercise.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office, Nagaland had 13,57,208 electors before the revision. Booth Level Officers collected 11,99,456 enumeration forms between August 16 and September 14, representing 88.38% of the earlier electorate.

The remaining 1,57,752 entries fell into categories requiring clarification or separate treatment. These included absent or permanently shifted electors, deceased voters and duplicate registrations.

However, the figures do not establish that all the affected individuals were wrongly removed. Election officials have explained that some people could not be traced, had moved elsewhere, had not submitted their forms or appeared in multiple locations.

Therefore, the central question is whether the verification process has correctly identified each case and provided eligible voters with a fair opportunity to remain on the electoral roll.

Congress Seeks Verification of Voter Entries

Congress leaders have called for closer scrutiny of the figures and greater transparency in the revision process. The party wants the authorities to examine the reasons behind the entries and ensure that genuine voters do not lose their voting rights because of administrative errors.

NPCC president and Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir has raised concerns about the difference between the original electorate and the enumeration forms received. He said the party had discussed the matter with the Election Commission, which assured it that there had been no intentional deletion or manipulation.

However, Jamir indicated that the party was still seeking final findings on the discrepancies. He also referred to the need for another round of house-to-house verification to address unresolved cases.

Meanwhile, Congress representatives have stressed the importance of involving Booth Level Agents appointed by political parties. Their participation could help identify errors, check disputed entries and improve confidence in the final voter list.

What the Electoral Roll Data Shows

The official figures provide a clearer picture of the Nagaland voter discrepancies reported during the SIR exercise.

The Election Department identified 1,23,749 entries under the category of absent, permanently shifted or other cases. It also recorded 28,944 deceased electors and 5,059 duplicate or multiple registrations.

These categories together account for the 1,57,752 entries not covered by collected enumeration forms. The authorities have stated that voters registered at multiple locations will retain their names at only one place.

Moreover, the publication of the draft electoral roll does not automatically settle every disputed case. Electoral Registration Officers must examine claims, objections and supporting documents before deciding individual applications.

The distinction matters because an entry flagged during enumeration is not necessarily proof of wrongdoing. Each case requires appropriate verification under the applicable electoral rules.

Verification Process and Voter Rights

The Election Department has outlined procedures for people seeking inclusion or correction in the electoral roll. During the designated claims and objections period, eligible applicants could submit Form 6 with the prescribed declaration to request inclusion.

The official schedule placed the claims and objections period between September 20 and October 20, 2026. The subsequent notice and disposal process is scheduled to continue until November 18.

Additionally, voters can consult the Chief Electoral Officer’s website and contact their local election officials for information about their registration status and relevant procedures.

Political parties and election authorities also have a role in informing voters about these processes. Clear communication can help people understand whether they need to provide documents, correct personal details or seek inclusion.

Final Checks Ahead of Electoral Roll Publication

Nagaland’s final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on November 22, 2026. Until then, scrutiny of disputed entries and the disposal of pending cases will remain important to the revision process.

The Congress has maintained that verification must address the reported discrepancies and protect eligible citizens from wrongful exclusion. At the same time, election authorities must distinguish genuine voters from duplicate or otherwise ineligible entries through established procedures.

Ultimately, the handling of Nagaland voter discrepancies will depend on transparent checks, accurate records and fair consideration of individual cases. A reliable electoral roll must exclude invalid entries without denying eligible citizens their right to vote.
