Silchar civic poll has come under scrutiny after a viral video allegedly showed a man from a panchayat area casting a vote at a polling station in Ward 3.

The allegation has not been officially established. No authority has confirmed that the person shown was ineligible to vote or that polling staff breached procedure. Therefore, the claims require verification through electoral records and an official inquiry.

Silchar civic poll faces eligibility questions

The video, which circulated on social media during Saturday’s polling, allegedly shows a man casting his ballot and recording the process on a mobile phone. A local report identified him as Shahid Laskar, also known as Moyna, and alleged that he lives in Dayapur in Udharbond.

The key issue is whether the person was listed as an elector in the relevant municipal ward. The allegation says he belongs to a panchayat area rather than the Silchar Municipal Corporation area. If verified, that would raise questions about how his name appeared on the electoral roll and how he passed verification at the booth.

However, these points remain allegations. A person’s place of residence alone does not establish whether they were legally entitled to vote in a particular ward. The electoral roll and official polling records would be needed to determine eligibility.

Voter verification comes under focus

The controversy has placed voter verification at the centre of the Silchar civic poll debate. Polling officials are expected to identify voters and check their details against the electoral roll before allowing them to vote.

The Assam State Election Commission published the final electoral roll in July after disposing of claims and objections. The roll covered 42 wards and listed 2,70,774 electors.

That process gave eligible voters an opportunity to check their entries before polling. Yet, the current allegation shows why accurate rolls and careful booth-level verification remain important during civic elections.

Silchar civic poll and ballot secrecy

The viral footage has also raised a separate concern about ballot secrecy. The video reportedly appears to show the individual recording the act of marking the ballot before turning the camera towards himself.

Whether the recording was made inside the polling station and under what circumstances will need to be established.

Meanwhile, the alleged voting incident and the alleged recording should be treated as separate questions. Even if the person proves eligible, authorities may still need to examine whether the recording complied with polling rules.

Why the allegation matters

Silchar held its first Municipal Corporation election on October 3, marking the transition from the former municipal board to the new urban local body. The corporation has 42 wards, although polling took place in 40 because candidates in two wards were elected unopposed.

About 2.7 lakh electors were eligible to vote, while 131 candidates contested the 40 wards, according to reports ahead of polling. The scale of the election makes the accuracy of the electoral roll and the consistency of verification especially important.

Moreover, the election followed a long gap without an elected civic body. That gives the first corporation poll added significance for residents and candidates. As a result, allegations involving voter eligibility can quickly become a wider test of confidence in the electoral process.

Official verification remains key

At present, there is no confirmed finding that an ineligible person cast a vote in Ward 3. The allegation rests on the identity and residence claims circulating alongside the video.

Authorities may also need to examine the original video and establish when and where it was recorded.

The Silchar civic poll has proceeded, but questions around the alleged vote could persist until officials clarify the facts. A transparent verification process would help distinguish a genuine electoral lapse from an unsubstantiated claim.

For now, the incident highlights a basic requirement of every election: eligible voters must be properly identified, while allegations of irregular voting must be tested against official records rather than social media claims.
