In a significant blow to women’s football in the country, Kerala Blasters announced the temporary shutdown of their women’s team due to financial difficulties. This decision comes as a consequence of sanctions imposed on the club after their men’s team walked out of an Indian Super League playoff fixture last season.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) levied a hefty fine of Rs 4 crore on Kerala Blasters following the controversial incident involving their men’s team. The walkout occurred during a match against Bengaluru FC on March 3, sparked by a contentious goal scored by Sunil Chhetri from a free kick.

During the match, referee Crystal John did not blow the whistle before Chhetri took the kick, leading the Blasters players to argue that the goal should not have been allowed as they were not prepared. In an act of protest, the Blasters players walked off the pitch, subsequently forfeiting the match.

The repercussions of the men’s team’s actions have now extended to the women’s team, as the financial burden resulting from the hefty fine has led to the temporary closure of the women’s side. This unfortunate development is a setback for women’s football in the region, as the Kerala Blasters women’s team had been making notable progress and contributions to the sport.

The decision to suspend the women’s team highlights the broader challenges faced by women’s football in India. Despite significant advancements and increased attention towards the women’s game, it continues to grapple with issues such as inadequate funding, limited resources, and unequal opportunities compared to the men’s game.

The Kerala Blasters women’s team had been a source of pride for the state, showcasing the talent and potential of women in football. Their participation in various competitions and leagues helped raise the profile of women’s football in the region. The team served as an inspiration for aspiring female footballers and played a crucial role in fostering a culture of inclusivity and gender equality in sports.

The temporary shutdown is a regrettable outcome for the players and coaching staff of the women’s team, who now find themselves in a state of uncertainty. It not only affects their careers but also dampens the hopes and aspirations of young girls who dream of pursuing a future in football.

The incident involving the men’s team, which ultimately led to the current situation, emphasizes the need for fair play and sportsmanship in professional football. While it is important to address any perceived injustices or controversies, it is equally crucial to handle such situations in a manner that upholds the integrity of the sport and ensures a level playing field.

Moving forward, it is imperative that football authorities and stakeholders in India work towards providing equal support and opportunities for women’s football. This includes addressing the financial challenges faced by women’s teams and implementing measures to promote gender parity in the sport.

Despite this setback, it is crucial to remain optimistic about the future of women’s football in India. The passion and talent displayed by female players across the country continue to be a driving force behind the growth and development of the game. Efforts must be made to rectify the current situation and ensure that women’s football receives the attention, resources, and recognition it deserves. Only then can the sport truly thrive and provide equal opportunities for all aspiring athletes, irrespective of gender.
