The National Inter-State Championship, held as the final selection trial for the upcoming Asian Games, witnessed exceptional performances from India’s esteemed athletes. Notably, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra was absent from the competition. Nevertheless, shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar stole the limelight with their outstanding displays.

In spite of the challenging hot and humid conditions, over 70 athletes managed to surpass the qualifying marks set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for their respective events at the Asian Games. The Games are scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8.

The National Inter-State Championship served as a crucial platform for India’s elite athletes to showcase their prowess and secure their spots in the Asian Games contingent. Tajinderpal Singh Toor, a prominent shot putter, impressed spectators and experts alike with his remarkable performance. His powerful throws not only breached the qualifying mark but also demonstrated his potential to compete at an international level.

Similarly, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar exhibited extraordinary skill and determination, delivering an exceptional performance that left the audience in awe. Sreeshankar’s leaps not only met the qualifying standard but also showcased his ability to contend for a medal at the Asian Games.

The scorching weather conditions posed a significant challenge for all athletes participating in the National Inter-State Championship. Despite the adversity, these exceptional individuals displayed unwavering focus and determination, surpassing expectations and setting new benchmarks in Indian athletics.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) will now rely on the expertise of its selection committee to assemble the Indian athletics team for the Asian Games. The committee will carefully evaluate the performances of athletes in various events held throughout the year, including the recently concluded Federation Cup.

The Federation Cup, held last month, played a vital role in providing athletes with a platform to showcase their skills and strive for selection. With the performances from both the National Inter-State Championship and the Federation Cup taken into account, the selection committee faces the arduous task of handpicking the most deserving athletes to represent India on the grand stage of the Asian Games.

The impressive performances witnessed at the National Inter-State Championship and the Federation Cup attest to the immense talent and potential within the Indian athletics fraternity. These dedicated athletes have not only proven their mettle but also demonstrated their readiness to compete against the best in Asia.

As the selection process unfolds, the hopes and aspirations of the athletes hang in the balance. The chosen Indian athletics team will aim to showcase their skills, dedication, and resilience at the Asian Games, striving to bring honor and glory to the nation.
