In a significant development, India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, virtually inaugurated the ‘New Delhi Hall’ at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Secretariat in Beijing. The beautifully designed hall serves as a representation of “mini-India” and aims to enhance cultural understanding of the country. The inauguration took place ahead of the upcoming SCO summit, which will be held under India’s Presidency for the first time.

The SCO Secretariat is located in a prestigious diplomatic area in Beijing and serves as the administrative hub for the eight-member organization comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan. The SCO plays a crucial role in promoting regional cooperation, stability, and development among its member countries.

During the virtual inauguration, Minister Jaishankar emphasized the significance of the ‘New Delhi Hall’ as a platform to showcase India’s rich cultural heritage. The hall serves as a window into India’s diverse traditions, art forms, and history, providing visitors with a glimpse into the essence of the country. Its creation is expected to foster a deeper understanding of India’s culture among SCO member states and promote cultural exchanges and collaborations.

The inauguration of the ‘New Delhi Hall’ assumes added importance as it precedes the SCO summit, which will be held under India’s Presidency. As the host nation, India has a unique opportunity to shape the agenda and discussions of the summit, focusing on regional cooperation, security, and economic development. The inauguration of the hall reflects India’s commitment to strengthening cultural ties and promoting mutual understanding within the SCO framework.

India’s participation in the SCO is rooted in the country’s strategic interests, as it provides a platform for engagement with Central Asian nations and deepens ties with neighboring countries. The SCO encompasses a wide range of areas for cooperation, including political, economic, and security dimensions. India’s involvement in the organization has expanded since becoming a full member in 2017, with active participation in various initiatives and working groups.

As the SCO summit approaches, India’s Presidency will be an opportunity to advance its interests and contribute to the organization’s objectives. In addition to the diplomatic engagements, the ‘New Delhi Hall’ will serve as a symbol of India’s cultural richness, acting as a bridge between different cultures and promoting people-to-people exchanges. It represents a significant step in enhancing India’s soft power and showcasing its cultural diversity to the world.

The inauguration of the ‘New Delhi Hall’ at the SCO Secretariat marks an important milestone in India’s engagement with the organization. The hall’s exquisite design and cultural significance will enable a better understanding of India’s culture among the SCO member states. As India assumes the Presidency of the SCO, the inauguration holds special relevance, reflecting India’s commitment to promoting cultural cooperation and strengthening ties with its regional partners.
