Oscar Pistorius Granted Parole After Serving 10 Years for the Murder of Reeva Steenkamp

Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Paralympic gold medalist who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, has been granted parole after serving 10 years in prison.

Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years and five months in prison for shooting Steenkamp multiple times through the locked door of a toilet in his home on Valentine’s Day 2013. He claimed he mistook her for an intruder, but prosecutors argued that he killed her in a fit of rage.

Pistorius was eligible for parole after serving two-thirds of his sentence, but his release was delayed several times due to legal challenges. In June 2023, the South African Supreme Court of Appeal ruled that he could be released on parole.

Pistorius will be subject to strict parole conditions, including house arrest, electronic monitoring, and community service. He will also be required to undergo psychotherapy and anger management treatment.

The decision to grant Pistorius parole has been met with mixed reactions. Some people believe that he has served his time and deserves a second chance, while others believe that he should have remained in prison for the full 13 years.

Steenkamp’s family has said that they are “disappointed” with the decision to grant Pistorius parole. They believe that he has not shown remorse for his crime and that he should have been punished more severely.

Pistorius’ release from prison is a controversial decision. It is likely to continue to be debated for many years to come.
