CJP Assam tensions have intensified after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticised the organisation’s activities and said they were against the interests of the state’s people.

Sarma made the remarks on October 5 while speaking to reporters after attending the inauguration of Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital. His comments came amid a growing political exchange between the organisation and the Assam government.

The chief minister said CJP had also faced criticism from the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). He added that he had criticised the organisation himself. However, Sarma said his position on organisations such as AASU was based on individual issues rather than any political understanding.

CJP Assam debate focuses on state issues

The latest CJP Assam dispute follows the organisation’s recent activities in the state. CJP held its first regional volunteers’ meeting in Guwahati in late September. Assam Police detained several members, including co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka, ahead of the gathering.

The detentions triggered a sharp response from CJP leaders. Ranka accused the state government of attempting to prevent the organisation from raising questions about public issues in Assam. The organisation also raised concerns about government schools and other matters during its outreach.

Police action against the group became a political flashpoint. Opposition voices criticised the detention, while CJP leaders said they would continue their activities in the state.

Himanta questions CJP’s relevance in Assam

Sarma also questioned the organisation’s relevance in Assam. He pointed to the presence of several established student and community organisations that, according to him, already represent different sections of the state.

The chief minister referred to AASU, the All Bodo Students’ Union, the Koch-Rajbongshi organisation and the Rabha Students’ Union among others. He argued that Assam already has established platforms dealing with local issues.

His remarks add a new dimension to the CJP Assam dispute. Rather than treating the organisation’s activities only as a political challenge, Sarma framed the issue around Assam’s existing social and community institutions.

Meanwhile, CJP has continued to expand its public campaign. Recent reports indicate that the organisation has raised concerns about issues including schools and electoral processes.

Congress also faces Himanta’s political attack

Sarma also criticised the Congress while responding to questions about party leaders visiting Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi’s protest site.

Gogoi has been staging an indefinite protest at the Assam Assembly premises over compensation for flood-affected families. Sarma questioned the timing of the Congress MLAs’ visit and linked it to the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.

The Nagaon bypoll has added political pressure in Assam, with the BJP, Congress and other parties competing for support. Campaigning has also sharpened exchanges between the ruling party and opposition groups.

Sarma suggested that Congress leaders’ presence at Gogoi’s protest was connected to the electoral contest. He also remarked that political disagreements could emerge again after the bypoll.

AASU and CJP remain at odds

The CJP Assam controversy has also brought the organisation into conflict with established student groups. AASU has criticised CJP’s activities and expressed concern over its outreach in the state.

Reports on October 5 said a student body had accused CJP’s school visits of attempting to disturb peace in the region. The development came after CJP launched its “School Thik Karo” campaign to assess infrastructure and facilities in government schools.

CJP, for its part, has maintained that it wants to highlight public concerns. Its supporters have defended the organisation’s right to conduct outreach and raise questions about governance.

The competing positions show how quickly CJP’s presence has become part of Assam’s wider political debate.

CJP Assam dispute enters a wider political phase

The CJP Assam dispute now involves the government, established student organisations, opposition parties and the new political group itself. Sarma’s latest remarks indicate that the state government does not view CJP’s activities as a neutral campaign on public issues.

At the same time, CJP has signalled that it intends to continue its activities in Assam. Its confrontation with the government has already drawn attention beyond the state, while Congress and other opposition groups have also responded to developments involving the organisation.

For now, the dispute remains political rather than a settled question of fact. Sarma has criticised CJP’s activities as harmful to Assam’s interests, while CJP has continued to present its campaign as an effort to raise public concerns. The coming weeks are likely to show whether the confrontation grows further or shifts towards other political issues.
